Cardinal Drops Tough 2-0 Decision to Arizona State

Stanford, Calif. - Two sixth inning runs for Arizona State made the difference tonight in a pitching battle between the No. 7 Sun Devilsand the No. 16/17 Stanford Cardinal at SmithFamily Stadium. Stanford's Missy Penna allowed just three hits and struck out nine batters, but the Sun Devilsprevailed over the Cardinal for the third time this season, 2-0. Stanford falls to 30-14 overall and 5-8 in the Pac-10with the loss, while ASU climbs to 45-11, 9-4.
Arizona State put two in scoring position in the first inning, but didn't do so again until the sixth. Jessica Mapesled off the decisive inning with an infield single and Mindy Cowles was hit by a pitch to put two on with one out.Bianca Cruz then cracked what proved to be the game-winning hit to right field, drilling a ball at Shannon Koplitz.Koplitz threw home in time to get Mapes, but a collision at the plate knocked the ball loose and allowed both Mapesand Cowles to score. Penna struck out the next two batters to end the Sun Devil run, but the visitors had alreadydone the two-run damage.
Stanford came back fighting in the bottom half of the sixth, with both of the team's hits coming in the inning as well asthree of the team's five base runners. Tricia Aggabao started the rally with a bunt single and safely made it to secondon an infield grounder by Alissa Haber. With two outs, freshman Shannon Koplitz stepped up and drilled a hit toleft center. Haber was picked off at second on the play, however, keeping Aggabao's run off the Stanford tally.
The Cardinal will continue Pac-10 play tomorrow, taking on the conference-leading Arizona Wildcats at 1 p.m.at Smith Family Stadium.
