April 27, 2007
LOS ANGELES - The Bruins brought their bats to the ballpark on Friday afternoon at Easton Stadium, connecting on eight hits en route to an 8-0 victory over Oregon. Jaisa Creps had the only extra base hit on the day for UCLA, a three-run double in the fourth inning. With the win, UCLA improves to 31-13 (7-6 Pac-10) while Oregon falls to 39-12 (4-9 Pac-10).
UCLA posted an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning. Krista Colburn led off the game with a single down the third base line, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jaisa Creps and came around to score on a ground ball hit by Jodie Legaspi.
The Bruins added four more runs in the fourth inning, all scoring with two outs. Whitney Holum led off the inning with a walk and was replaced by pinch runner Lauren Wilmoth. Wilmoth would advance on a ground out by Kaila Shull. Tara Henry extended the inning with two outs, connecting on a critical slap-hit single to shortstop, leaving the Bruins with runners on the corners and the top of the lineup coming to the plate.
Colburn would draw a four-pitch walk to load the bases for Creps, who made the Ducks pay for the free pass to Colburn. With a 3-1 count, Creps connected on a three-run bases-clearing double off of the fence in left centerfield, scoring Wilmoth, Henry and Colburn on the play to give UCLA a 4-0 lead. A Lisa Dodd single would score Creps to make the score 5-0 heading to the fifth inning.
In the fifth, the Ducks put in Kristi Leiter to face the first four batters of the inning, but Leiter was unable to record an out. She walked Holum and Shull before allowing a bloop single to right by Julie Burney and an RBI walk to Tara Henry, at which point Oregon re-entered starting pitcher Melissa Rice, who saw Colburn connect on a sacrifice fly, Creps single to re-load the bases and Jodie Legaspi come through with the walk-off single to score Henry and invoke the eight run rule.
Freshman pitcher Megan Langenfeld was impressive in the circle, striking out four and tossing a five-hit shutout for her ninth victory of the season.
UCLA returns to action with a pair of games this weekend against Oregon State. Saturday's game is scheduled for a 2 pm first pitch while the Beavers and Bruins will start at 1 pm on Sunday.
