Trojans Jump Out To Lead In Annual Dual Meet Winning Both Hammer Competitions
April 27, 2007
The 75th annual USC-UCLA Dual Meet began today (April 27) with the men's and women's hammer throw competition and the Trojans took the lead by getting winning throws by Adam Midles and Eva Orban. Today's event took place at West L.A. College, but the rest of the meet, which begins at 11 a.m. tomorrow, will be at Loker Stadium on the USC campus.
Midles set a new personal best and bettered his fourth-place standing in the USC record books with a throw of 228-3 (69.57m) to win the men's competition. The redshirt senior's mark of 228-3 is the fourth-farthest throw by a collegian this year and the fourth time this season he has set a new PR. Bruins Boldizsar Kocsor (217-2) and Andrew Ninow (207-4) placed second and third respectively, so the USC men's team leads 5-4 after one event.
Sophomore Orban won her second consecutive USC-UCLA Dual Meet women's hammer competition, this time with a throw of 210-0 (64.00m). Last season, Orban won with a meet-record throw of 215-0.
Also for a second consecutive season, USC swept the women's hammer competition to take a 9-0 lead, as senior Julia Rozenfeld placed second with a season-best throw of 201-8 (61.46m) and senior Alexandrea Williams placed third with a throw of 168-4 (51.30m). Rozenfeld scored in all four of the Dual Meets she participated in, placing third as a freshman, winning as a sophomore and placing second the last two seasons to teammate Orban.
Also competing for the USC men's team in the hammer today were redshirt sophomore Brian Wilhelm who placed fourth with a throw of 186-0, redshirt sophomore Mike Curiel who placed fifth with a new PR of 175-2, junior Jekabs Sliede who placed sixth with a new PR of 173-9 and redshirt senior Noah Bryant who had three fouls and did not advance to the finals.
