Washington State Edges USC, 5-4

LOS ANGELES - Paul Gran went 3-for-5 with a double, home run and three RBI Friday as the Washington State Cougars beat the USC Trojans, 5-4, in a Pac-10 Conference game at Dedeaux Field. Gran blasted a three-run homer in the fifth as the Cougars held off a ninth inning rally by the Trojans.

Washington State is now 21-18 overall while USC is now 21-22 with both teams possessing a 4-9 conference mark.

Wayne Daman, Jr. (3-3) picked up the victory with seven innings where he scattered eight hits and gave up three unearned runs. Ross Humes came into the game in the ninth and earned his ninth save for the Cougars. Brad Boxberger (3-4) took the loss for the Trojans, allowing four runs on nine hits in seven innings with eight strikeouts.

Gran doubled and scored in the fourth on Greg Lagried's RBI single. With two outs and two runners on base in the fifth, Gran hit his second homer of the season with a three-run blast to left. The Trojans responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, but J.J. Owen flied out to center for the final out.

The Cougars added another run in the eighth with the bases loaded on Travis Coulter's RBI single. Hector Estrella singled to lead off the USC ninth and scored on Matt Cusick's RBI sacrifice fly, but Humes struck out Spencer Pabst and retired Grant Green on a groundout to end the game.
