Michael Taylor's Walkoff Homer Lifts Stanford To 9-7 Win Over No. 8 Oregon State
April 28, 2007
Stanford, Calif. - Michael Taylor blasted a three-run walkoff homer with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning to lift Stanford (18-22, 3-11 Pac-10) to a dramatic 9-7 upset victory over defending CWS champion and No. 8 Oregon State (33-8, 5-5 Pac-10) on a hot Saturday afternoon at Sunken Diamond. Taylor's shot down the left field line came on a 2-2 pitch with the Cardinal behind 7-6 and one strike away from defeat.
Taylor's dramatic home run came in his next at bat after he had grounded into a sharply hit inning-ending double play with the bases loaded and the score tied 6-6 in the bottom of the ninth.
Oregon State had taken a 7-6 lead in a topsy-turvy game when Jordan Lennerton led off the top of the 11th inning with his second solo homer of the contest.
Nolan Gallagher (3-5) picked up the win by limiting the Beavers to three runs over his 5.0 inning relief stint despite allowing six hits and walking five. Gallagher also struck out five.
Oregon State reliever Anton Maxwell (3-1) took his first loss of the season as he was charged with two of the three runs in the bottom of the 11th after allowing a leadoff single to Joey August and walking Sean Ratliff two batters later before he was removed in favor of Greg Keim (0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER). Keim got the second out of the inning when August was called for interference going from second to third base on a Gerhart grounder to Beaver third baseman Lonnie Lechelt before giving up Taylor's game-winning blast.
Stanford and Oregon State will conclude their current three-game series at Sunken Diamond on Sunday (12:30 pm, PT). Oregon State is slated to send RHP Jorge Reyes (2-0, 2.30) to the mound for Sunday's rubber game, while the Cardinal is scheduled to go with RHP Erik Davis (2-0, 4.15).
