No. 12 California Upsets No. 11 Washington

April 28, 2007

SEATTLE, Wash. - The California Golden Bears won three of the four races, beating Washington in a dual race for fourth consecutive year. The varsity four, second varsity eight and varsity eight were all victorious, but the Huskies avoided a sweep by winning the novice eight race.

In the varsity four race Cal opened up an early two second lead, and never let up, gradually increasing their lead. The Bears eventually defeated Washington by 2.3 seconds.

The Huskies dominated the novice eight race, capturing a 3.6 second lead after 500 meters. The Bears continued to fall further behind over the course of the race, never finishing within three seconds for a 500 meter split. Washington finished the race 17 seconds ahead of Cal.

The Bears got off to a strong start in the second varsity eight race, capturing a quick lead. The Huskies never mounted a comeback, finishing the race nearly nine seconds behind Cal.

In the Simpson Cup race the Cal varsity eight didn't waste any time gaining the lead. After just 500 meters the Bears were in a 2.14 second lead. By the end of the race Cal had extended their margin of victory to 6.4 seconds. This Cal victory marked Cal's second time in school history winning the varsity eight race against Washington four consecutive years, the only other time came in the first four meetings between the two schools (1977-1980).

The Bears will next race in the Pac-10 championships May 13, 2007, on Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova, Calif.
