Schwikert Second On Bars at NCAA Championships

April 28, 2007

In the individual event finals on Saturday evening at the Huntsman Center, UCLA junior Tasha Schwikert placed second on uneven bars, and freshman Anna Li placed ninth on balance beam.

Schwikert, who placed first on uneven bars in session two, was the first competitor of the night. She performed her usual routine, highlighted by a Shaposhnikova to shootover half to handstand, Tkatchev, perfect handstands and a stuck double layout dismount for a9.9125 average. She received two 9.95 marks from the six judges.Defending co-bars champion and 2004 Olympic bronze medalist Courtney Kupets equaled her score one competitor later, but their mark was surpassed later by Alabama's Terin Humphrey (9.9500), the 2004 Olympic silver medalist who successfully reclaimed her 2005 bars title.Schwikert's second-place finish surpassed her 2005 finish, when she tied for third.

'I felt really good about my routine, and I stuck my dismount,'Schwikert said. 'I was committed to hitting my handstands, keeping impeccable form and sticking the dismount.'

Li waited over two hours after the start of competition before her turn on the balance beam and had another delay when the balance beam had to be scrubbed down due to blood on the apparatus. She had a strong routine going, hitting her backhandspring/layout, but on her switch leap/straddle jump/Shushounova, her hands slipped on the Shushounova. She recovered nicely and finished with a stuck double full dismount but was docked for the slip and received a 9.7875.
