Slovic Advances to Finals at Pac-10 Championships

April 28, 2007

Ojai, Calif. - Senior Alex Slovic became the just second Husky to advance to the Pac-10 Men's Championship Singles finals by beating Juan Carlos Rebaza of Arizona State on Saturday morning in a semifinal match. Slovic beat Rebaza 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 to earn a right to play defending Pac-10 Singles Champion Matt Bruch of Stanford on Sunday in Ojai, Calif.

Slovic's win over Rebaza was the second time that he has beat Arizona State's top player this season. The two faced each other back on April 13, with Slovic coming out on top 6-1, 6-1.

Sunday's match between Slovic and Bruch will be the second time the pair have met this season. Slovic escaped with a three-set victory back on April 7 in Seattle.

Slovic, ranked 87th nationally, is aiming to become the first Husky to win a Pac-10 Singles Championship. Former Husky Alex Vlaski advanced to the finals three times (2002, 2003, 2005) in his career, but lost all three matches.

In the Pac-10 Invitational bracket, Husky freshman Derek Drabble earned a trip to both the singles and doubles finals. Drabble beat Cal's Daniel Sebescan 7-6, 2-6, 6-2 to earn a shot at the title against USC's Jason McNaughton on Sunday.

Drabble also paired with Andy Kuharszky and beat a team consisting of UCLA's Andrew Eklov and Stanford's Jeffrey Zeller to advance to Sunday's final. The Husky duo will face Stanford's Eric McKean and Dave Ryan on Sunday.
