Babos Falls in Pac-10 Title Match
April 29, 2007
OJAI - Fourth-ranked Susie Babos came up short of winning the Pac-10 singles title in the final day of the Pac-10 championships on Sunday. Although Babos lost, the doubles team of sophomores Bojana Bobusic and Claire Ilcinkas won the doubles invitational championship.
Babos, the reigning NCAA singles champion, lost to USC's Lindsey Nelson, 6-2, 6-2. It was the third meeting of the season between the two, and the fourth since last year's NCAA singles final.
'I'm really proud of how hard Susie battled to get to the final,' Cal head coach Jan Brogan said. 'She wasn't playing at the top of her game for the whole tournament, but she matured mentally as a player. She just happened to run into somebody (Nelson) who was playing at the top of her game.'
The Golden Bears left the conference championships with one title, as Bobusic and Ilcinkas beat Laila Abdala and Rebecca Rankin from Arizona State, 8-3, to win the doubles invitational crown.
'They were so solid and played some great doubles today,' Brogan said. 'That was some of the best volleying I've seen from them this year. They did a great job of keeping their composure on the court.'
Cal has next weekend off. The next time the Bears take the court it will be in the NCAA regionals on May 12-13. Cal will find out on Tuesday, May 1, where it will be playing in the regionals.
