Bruch Wins Second Straight Pac-10 Championship

April 29, 2007

Matt Bruch may have had a frustrating 2007 season, but he enjoyed a tremendous four days at the Pac-10 Individual Championships in Ojai. Bruch, who was limited during the season due to injury, today won both the singles and doubles championships. He beat Alex Slovic of Washington for the singles title, then teamed with Blake Muller to beat Robert Farah and Kaes Van't Hof of USC for the doubles championship.

Bruch continued his overpowering play at the Pac-10's by handing Slovic a 6-0, 6-4 defeat. Bruch not only gave Stanford its fourth straight conference singles champion, but he became the third player in Cardinal history to win back-to-back Pac-10 titles, joining Sam Warburg (2004, 2005) and Alex O'Brien (1991, 1992). Bruch is not the first Cardinal to win both the Pac-10 singles and doubles titles in the same year. Sam Warburg accomplished that feat in 2005.

Bruch's run to the conference title was an impressive end to an injury-plagued 2007 season that saw the All-America play in only 12 singles matches the entire season and win only three prior to the Pac-10's. He entered the conference championships not only with a 3-9 overall record, but a 1-7 mark against nationally-ranked opponents. He went 5-0 in the Pac-10's the last four days, including a 3-0 mark against ranked opponents. He beat No. 67 Kaes Van't Hof of USC in the quarterfinals and No. 30 Pierre Mouillan of Cal in the semifinals before today's win over Slovic, ranked No. 67.

A year ago, Bruch went 30-9 as a freshman and was named First-Team All-America, First-Team All-Pac-10 and was the Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year.

In the men's doubles competition, Bruch and Muller, the No. 12 ranked doubles team in the country, beat the Trojan's Farah and Van't Hof, 6-2, 6-4. Bruch and Muller will next compete at the NCAA Championships that begin May 17 in Athens. GA.

Stanford's Eric McKean and David Ryan lost their bid to win the invitational doubles title as the Cardinal duo were beaten by Derek Drabble and Andy Kuharszky of Washington, 8-5.
