April 29, 2007

BERKELEY, CALIF. - Sophomore shortstop Michael Brady hit two homes and knocked in five RBI as California upset No. 6-ranked Arizona State, 13-9, Sunday in a Pac-10 contest at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears, who ended up winning the series after topping the Sun Devils, 4-2, on Friday and falling 15-2 Saturday, improved to 23-21 overall and 7-8 in the Pac-10. The Sun Devils, who had entered the weekend on a 12-game winning streak, fell to 34-12 and 11-4 in conference play.

Besides Brady's three-run homer in the sixth inning and two-run homer in the eighth inning, Cal also received home runs from sophomore first baseman David Cooper, senior third baseman Brett Munster and freshman left fielder Jeff Kobernus. It was the first career home runs for Brady, and the first career homer for Kobernus. The winning pitcher for the Bears was sophomore closer Matt Gorgen (2-4), who pitched the final 3.0 innings with four hits, two runs, four walks and four strikeouts.

After ASU had scored two unearned runs in the top of the first inning off of Cal starter Craig Bennigson (career-high 6.0 innings, five hits, three runs, one earned run, one walk, four strikeouts) on RBI singles by Brett Wallace and Ike Davis, the Bears tied the game, 2-2, on Cooper's two-run homer to left field in the fourth inning off of Sun Devil starter Brian Flores (5.0 innings, five hits, five runs, one walk, three strikeouts).

ASU added a run in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Eric Sogard. Cal responded by scoring twice in the bottom of the fifth on Munster's two-run homer to left. Ahead 4-3, the Bears exploded for five runs in the sixth on an RBI single by sophomore right fielder Ryan Hanlon, a sacrifice fly by freshman designated hitter/pitcher Blake Smith and Brady's three-run homer off of Sun Devil freshman pitcher Jason Jarvis (1-2, 2.0 innings, five hits, five runs, one walk, one strikeout).

Down 9-3, ASU came storming back to tie the game, 9-9, by scoring five runs in the seventh inning and a run in the top of the eighth. In the five-run seventh, the Sun Devils scored on a bases loaded walk to Wallace, a two-run double by Jarvis, a run-scoring double play ball hit by Petey Paramore and an RBI double by Matt Spencer. Sogard tied the game at nine apiece with an RBI single up the middle in the eighth inning.

But Cal was not done offensively. In the bottom of the eighth, pinch hitter Jordan Karnofsky led off with a single, pinch runner Brett Jackson was advanced to second on pinch hitter Rich Gorman's sacrifice bunt. After Munster lined-out to right field, Brady hit his second dramatic homer, this time a two-run shot. Kobernus followed with a solo home run to left to give the Bears a 12-9 advantage. Junior second baseman Josh Satin later gave Cal its 13th run on an RBI double.

The Bears next travel to San Francisco on Tuesday, May 1 at 3 p.m. at Dante Benedetti Diamond, before traveling to UCLA for a three-game Pac-10 series beginning Friday, May 4 at 6 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
