Cal Bedevils No. 7 Arizona State with a 2-1 Win
April 29, 2007
Berkeley - California received a second straight dominant pitching performance, this time from sophomore Lauren Frankiewicz, as the Golden Bears defeated the seventh-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils for the second day in a row by a score of 2-1 in Levine-Fricke field on Sunday afternoon.
Frankiewicz allowed just one run and scattered six hits to go along with nine strikeouts over 5.1 innings to earn her 15th win in the circle. Freshman Marissa Drewrey, who tossed a complete game shutout versus ASU on Saturday, collected her second save of the season after striking out three in 1.2 innings of work.
The Bears have not lost a season series to the Sun Devils since 2003.
Cal (30-27, 4-11 Pac-10) travels to Los Angeles to face the Bruins of UCLA on May 4, before heading to Seattle for a pair of games versus Washington, May 5-6.
Arizona State (45-13, 9-6 Pac-10) threatened in the top half of the fourth with the bases loaded and one out, but Fankiewciz got Caylyn Carlson to pop up to third baseman Katie Vickers, before striking out Katie Crabb to end the inning unscathed.
The Bears added another run in the fifth when Taylor Kelly connected for her first career home run over the left-center field portion of the wall, boosting the Cal lead to 2-0.
The Sun Devils trimmed the lead to 2-1 after Kristen Miller notched a solo home run in the sixth. However, ASU could get no closer in the frame after stranding Jackie Vasquez on second base.
Megan Elliot took the loss for Arizona State, allowing both runs on three hits in four innings of work.
