USC Battles For 10-8 Win Against Washington State

April 29, 2007

LOS ANGELES -- Hector Estrella's two-run single in the eighth provided the winning runs as the USC Trojans clinched the Pac-10 Conference series victory with a 10-8 win Sunday over the Washington State Cougars.

The Trojans scored three runs in the eighth and battled back after allowing four runs in the top of the first.

Freshman Robert Stock (Westlake Village/Agoura HS) slowed down the Washington State offense by throwing a season-high 5 1/3 innings. He entered the game in the first after starter Tommy Milone allowed four runs and allowed just one run on three hits with three walks and six strikeouts.

USC (23-22, 6-9) is currently in seventh place in the Pac-10, but only 1 1/2 games back of Washington and Oregon State, who are tied for fourth place at 6-6, and one game behind California (7-8). Washington State is now 21-20 overall and 4-11 in conference.

Roberto Lopez and Johnny Bowden had three hits each for the Trojans while Matt Cusick (Mission Viejo/Santa Margarita HS) went 2-for-5 with three RBI. Jeff Miller led the Cougars with a 4-for-5 day and two RBI.

Cody Bartlett led off the game with a triple off Milone as the Cougars followed with three consecutive singles from Miller, Paul Gran and Jared Prince. Greg Lagreid knocked out Milone with a two-run double for a 4-0 lead. USC chipped away with runs in the first three innings and tied the game in the third on J.J. Owen's RBI double down the third base line.

Zach Borba led off the WSU fourth with a solo home run to center off Stock before the Trojans took a 6-5 lead with two runs in the sixth. Darren Gemoll hit a bases-loaded ground ball with two outs, but Bartlett's throw pulled Murphy off the bag to provide the lead for USC.

Both teams traded a run in the seventh before the Cougars took the lead in the eighth. Scott Suttmeier singled off Kevin Couture and later scored on pinch hitter Simi Reynolds' hard double off the glove of USC first baseman Derek Perren. Miller followed with an RBI single to plate Reynolds and make it an 8-7 WSU lead.

Freshman Hector Rabago doubled to lead off for the Trojans in the eighth. After being sacrificed over to third, Rabago scored on a close play at the plate after beating a throw from Miller on Cusick's ground ball to second. Anthony Vasquez was hit by a pitch and a walk to Grant Green by Ross Humes loaded the bases. Humes struck out pinch hitter Lucas Duda for the second out before Estrella singled to center for the eventual game-winner.

Paul Koss (3-3) earned the win with 1 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing three hits.

USC will not play again until May 12-14 for a Pac-10 Conference series at Arizona. All three games of the series will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
