Varsity Posts 1-0 win in Alumni Women's Soccer Game
April 28, 2007
SEATTLE - Melissa Beal scored the only goal early in the second half Saturday, lifting the Washington women's soccer varsity squad to a 1-0 victory in their annual Alumni Game at Husky Soccer Field.
Alumni goalkeeper Kelsey Rasmussen, who completed her collegiate career last fall, deflected a hard shot. Beal collected the rebound and slid it past the diving Rasmussen for the game-winner.
The Husky varsity lost last year's Alumni Game by a 2-1 count. The alums were led in that 2006 game by goals from a pair of U.S. National Team members. Tina Frimpong found the back of the net as did Hope Solo, who is usually in the business of stopping scores. Solo was an accomplished field player, leading Washington state prep scorers, before concentrating on goalkeeping upon her arrival at UW.
Frimpong and Solo did not play for the alums Saturday as they are training with the national team. They will visit the UW campus, May 18 as special guests at the women's soccer benefit dinner.
This year's alumni squad included Tami Bennett, who is currently an assistant on the Husky coaching staff.
On Sunday, April 29, the UW women entertain Oregon State at noon in an exhibition game at Husky Soccer Field.
The Huskies host the Seattle Sounders women's team next Saturday, May 5. Kick-off is 7 p.m. at Husky Soccer Field.
The UW booters are in the midst of a successful spring season. They opened with matching 5-0 victories over Idaho and Western Washington. The Huskies routed their visitors from Bellingham on Saturday (April 21) behind two goals apiece from Dani Bridges and Katy Dowling and a single score by Jenna Robison.
Goalkeepers Alex Phillips and Showman teamed up for the shutout against WWU.
After that win, the Huskies traveled across town to play a night game at Seattle Pacific. The Falcons took advantage of an understandably sluggish UW start to score the game's only goal 10 minutes into the contest.
Carr played the entire game in goal for the Huskies.
