Bears Will Host NCAA Regional
May 1, 2007
BERKELEY - The No. 10 California women's tennis team will host an NCAA regional at the Hellman Tennis Center on Saturday, May 12, and Sunday, May 13. The Golden Bears will be joined in Berkeley by No. 18 Arizona State, No. 46 UNLV and No. 74 Southeastern Louisiana. This is the third year in a row Cal has hosted a regional.
Cal (19-6, 5-3) squares off against SE Louisiana in the first match on Saturday at 11 a.m. It will be the first contest ever between these teams. The Rebels and the Sun Devils take the courts at 2 p.m. The winners will meet Sunday at noon.
'We're pleased with our draw,' Cal head coach Jan Brogan said. 'We need to focus on the match that we're going to play first because there's so much parity that you don't want to look past anybody. I would say we're feeling pretty confident, you could feel it in the room that the girls are pretty confident.'
Earlier this season, the Bears knocked off Arizona State, 4-3, in Tempe, Ariz., and then swept the Sun Devils, 7-0, when they met at Hellman. Cal is 3-1 all time against UNLV and last played The Rebels in 2004, when the Bears swept them, 7-0.
Cal is led by junior Susie Babos, the defending NCAA singles champion. Babos is one of three Bears to be ranked in the top 25 of the ITA singles rankings (No. 4 Babos, No. 12 Zsuzsanna Fodor, No. 22 Nina Henkel).
The winner of the regional will advance to play the winner of a regional hosted by No. 7 seed Clemson in the NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga., starting May 18.
Tickets will be on sale at the door the day of the event only. The prices are $8 for adults and $4 for students, seniors and children.
