Brummett and Sorgi Garner Pac-10 Baseball Weekly Honors
May 1, 2007
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - STANFORD junior infielder Adam Sorgi has been named the Pacific-10 Conference Baseball Player of the Week and UCLA senior right-handed pitcher Tyson Brummett has been named Pitcher of the Week for April 24-30, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Sorgi, of Mission Viejo, Calif., hit .550 last week, leading the Cardinal to a pair of wins, including a 9-7 victory in 11-innings of play against No. 8 Oregon State. The junior was 11-for 20 with a double, triple and seven RBI to go along with four runs scored. Sorgi also had a .700 slugging percentage and a .625 on-base percentage, while fielding all 30 of his defensive chances successfully for a 1.000 fielding percentage. Sorgi had a multiple-hit game in four of his five contests and was 8-for-13 (.615) with a double, a triple and five RBI in a three-game series against the defending CWS champion Beavers. He also extended his current hit streak to seven games with multiple-hit games in six of those seven contests.
Brummett, of Salem, Utah, out-dueled Arizona ace Preston Guilmet on Friday evening at Jackie Robinson Stadium, as the Bruin right-hander pitched his sixth complete game to lead UCLA past No. 14 Arizona, 9-3. Brummett recorded his third complete game victory in his last three starts, striking out six and allowing just three runs (two earned) off five hits. Brummett has earned victories in each of his last five starts (all series-openers) and leads the Bruins with 83 strikeouts in 98.0 innings pitched. The complete game victory against Arizona, Brummett became just the 14th UCLA pitcher to hurl six or more complete games in one season.
The Player of the Week honor is the first of Sorgi's career, while it is the 61st such honor for Stanford. The Pitcher of the Week honor is the fourth for Brummett, the third of the season, and marks the 43rd selection all-time for UCLA.
