No. 22 UCLA Baseball Outlasts No. 12 UC Irvine, 4-2

IRVINE, Calif. - Third baseman Jermaine Curtis' three-run blast in the fourth inning helped lead the No. 22 UCLA baseball team past No. 12 UC Irvine, 4-2, Tuesday evening at Anteater Ballpark. Curtis finished 1-for-4 with one run, three RBI and his second home run in UCLA's last four games. Second baseman Alden Carrithers hit 3-for-5 with one run.
The Bruins (25-18) have won 17 of its last 21 games and have tallied victories in seven of their last eight road contests.
Freshman right-hander Garett Claypool (2-0) picked up the victory after limiting the host Anteaters to two runs off five hits through five innings. UC Irvine right-hander Dylan Axelrod (2-3) absorbed the loss, allowing four runs off five hits in 4.2 innings. Bruin left-hander Tim Murphy notched his first career save, striking out five hitters in 2.1 innings of relief.
The Bruins' fourth-inning rally began with two outs. Designated hitter Casey Haerther doubled to right-center field and moved to third on catcher Ryan Babineau's single. Curtis battled from an 0-and-2 count, fouling off two pitches, taking a ball and fouling off three more pitches before belting a three-run shot over the left field fence. The Bruins added one more run in the fourth on consecutive singles by Alden Carrithers, Brandon Crawford and Cody Decker.
UC Irvine (31-13-1) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. With runners at first and third, designated hitter Sean Madigan belted a two-RBI double off the right-field wall.
UCLA returns to action Friday, May 4, to open a three-game Pac-10 series against California at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Friday's first pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
Game Notes: Garett Claypool made his sixth start of the season...Jermaine Curtis' three-run home run was his second of his season and career - Curtis' other home run came on Friday, April 27, in UCLA's 9-3 victory over Arizona...in the Bruins' last seven games, Curtis has hit at a .500 clip (14-for-28) with two home runs and 11 RBI...Tim Murphy struck out Bryan Petersen on three pitches when he entered in the bottom of the seventh with two runners on base and two outs...Alden Carrithers posted his 19th multi-hit effort of the season.
