Bears Send Multiple Players to NCAA Individual Championships
May 2, 2007
BERKELEY - After both the men's and women's California tennis teams found out that they were invited to the NCAA regionals yesterday, three members of the women's squad and one from the men's team will compete in the individual singles and doubles tournaments May 23-28 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. The Golden Bears will be led by fourth-ranked Susie Babos and No. 26 Pierre Mouillon in the individual championships.
Babos will defend her 2006 NCAA singles championship as the No. 5 seed in this year's tournament. She won the national crown last year as an unseeded player. Babos will be joined by teammates Zsuzsanna Fodor and Nina Henkel, both of whom are ranked in the ITA singles Top 25 (No. 12 Fodor, No. 22 Henkel). Fodor will also be ranked in the tournament, entering as the No. 12 seed.
Mouillon is the lone member of the men's team to be selected. In the Pac-10 championships last week, he advanced to the semifinals in the singles draw and the doubles invitational draw.
In doubles, the pair of Babos and Fodor will represent the Bears, entering as the No. 5 seed. Although the fifth-ranked tandem made a second-round exit in the Pac-10 championships, Babos and Fodor have been ranked in the top five in doubles for the entire season.
The individual championships will start after the conclusion of the NCAA team championships, which begin on May 17. The Cal women enter the team tournament as the No. 10 seed, hosting Southeastern Louisiana in the first round on Saturday, May 12, at 11 a.m. The Cal men head to Stillwater, Okla., to face the Oklahoma Sooners May 12 at 9 a.m. (PT).
