Head men's track and field coach, Art Venegas, has announced the signing of six student-athletes to National Letters-of-Intent for the Spring signing period, hilighted by one of the top milers in the country, Fawad Khan. Also signing with the Bruins are - Matthew Hanley, Daniel Kirkpatrick, Brian Law, Thomas Nagengast and Quentin Powell.
'After last year's No. 1-ranked recruiting class (by Track & Field News), we are thrilled to come back with another extremely storng class, which should rank in the top--5 in the U.S.,' said Venegas. 'We are really pleased with the improvement of our distance corps with this year's class especially, and feel like we have all event groups covered.'
Matthew Hanley - Throws (Moorpark College):Has a best mark of 178-0 in the hammer throw.
'Matthew will specialize in the hammer at UCLA, but can throw in all the events. With so many of the top hammer throwers in the Pac-10 graduating this season, he will make an immediate impact for the team.'
Fawad Khan - Distances (Palos Verdes HS): Khan is the No. 1 1600m runner in CA (4:09.90) and is the No. 3 miler in the country (4:11.36). His 1500m time of 3:54.80 ranks second in California.
'We feel that Fawad has a lot of potential for our program in both the track and cross country seasons. He will make an impact with this program.'
Daniel Kirkpatrick - High Jump (Trabuco Hills HS): Has the No. 2 high jump mark in the state (6-10). He is also ranked in the top-10 in the country.
'Daniel is one of the leading jumpers in the state, and he will strengthen an area that we committed to developing this last year.'
Brian Law - Hurdles (Villa Park HS): Has a top 300m hurdle time of 38.47 (No. 10 in CA). Also has a best time of 14.91 in the 110mH (No. 25 in CA).
'We plan on developing Brian into a 400m hurdler. Coach (Tony) Veney is excited about his potential in this event because he is a tall, fluid runner.
Thomas Nagengast - Discus (Pasa Robles HS):Ranks amongst the top-10 in California in the discus (181-4).
'Thomas is a late bloomer that I feel will fit in nicely with the elite recruits we brought in last year. He is extremely long-limbed and very coordinated.'
Quentin Powell - Sprints (James Logan HS): Has prep bests of 21.55 in the 200m (Top-5 in CA) and 48.57 400m (No. 9 in CA).
'Quentin will give immediate help to both of our relays. He has developed into a fine 200m, but is also an oustanding quartermiler. He will vie for a starting spot on both relays right away. We are also excited to get another athlete from James Logan HS.'
These six join an already strong class of recruits who signed in the fall, led by the No. 800m runner in the country, Cory Primm. Also signing last fall were Michael Cybulski (distances), Nevin Guttierez (sprints), Kent Morikawa (distances), Jason Ward (sprints) and Evan Watchempino (distances).
