UCLA Tennis Players Chosen for NCAA Individual Championships

May 2, 2007

LOS ANGELES - UCLA men's tennis player Benjamin Kohlloeffel will get a chance to defend his 2006 NCAA singles title, as the Bruin senior was notified on Tuesday that he is one of 64 players selected to complete in this year's NCAA Championships. Five other UCLA players (three women and two men) were also chosen to represent UCLA in the individual portion of the tournament, which takes place May 23-28 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.

Kohlloeffel, who last year became UCLA's first NCAA singles champion since Billy Martin in 1984, is the tournament's No. 4 seed. Joining Kohlloeffel in the singles draw is sophomore Haythem Abid and senior Chris Surapol. Kohlloeffel will also be competing in the 32-team doubles draw with partner Philipp Gruendler.

On the women's side, junior Riza Zalameda, a 9-16 seed in the singles draw, will be joined by Tracy Lin and Yasmin Schnack. Schnack and Zalameda will also be representing UCLA in the doubles draw. Elizabeth Lumpkin and Stephanie Wetmore were chosen as the fifth alternate for the doubles tournament.

The UCLA men are seeking their first NCAA doubles title since Justin Gimelstob and Srdjan Muskatirovic took the crown back in 1996. The UCLA women are aiming for their first singles champion since Keri Phebus in 1995. UCLA's Daniela Bercek and Lauren Fisher captured the NCAA doubles title just three years ago, winning it all back in 2004.
