USC Sends Four Players Into NCAA Singles Action

May 3, 2007

The NCAA-bound USC men's and women's tennis teams will also have strong representation in the individual side of the 2007 NCAA Division I Tennis Championships this month. Two USC women - freshman Sarah Fansler and junior Lindsey Nelson - along with two USC men - seniors Jamil Al-Agba and Dejan Cvetkovic - have been selected to compete in the NCAA Singles Championships, to be held May 23-28 in Athens, Ga. A third Trojan, junior Kaes Van't Hof, has been named an alternate for the men's competition.

Following the Trojans' respective competition in the NCAA Team Championships from May 11-22, the individual men's and women's tournaments will take place at Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The USC women are the No. 8 seed on the women's side, and the men are seeded No. 12. For No. 12-ranked Fansler, this tournament will stand as the freshman's first trip to the NCAA Singles competition, but the newcomer already has established herself as a top competitor. She enters the individual tournament as one of eight players seeded 9-16 and holds the most wins on the USC roster with a 29-9 singles record entering the 2007 NCAA action. For junior Lindsey Nelson, the 2007 edition of the NCAA Singles Championships offers her the chance to go one win better than she did last season, when Nelson powered her way to the NCAA final. There, she fell to Cal's Susie Babos in the title match. However, Nelson is coming off an outstanding performance at the 2007 Pac-10 Championships, where she didn't give up a single set throughout her run to the Pac-10 title. There, she clashed again with defending NCAA champ Babos, and this time Nelson dispatched Babos in straight sets to claim the conference crown. Nelson brings in a 26-6 overall singles record. As a freshman, Nelson reached the NCAA Singles Round of 16. This season as a junior, she is the No. 4 seed in the draw.

On the men's side, Al-Agba and Cvetkovic have both secured at-large slots in the NCAA Men's Singles Championships. Van't Hof stands as the fifth of seven alternates listed for the tournament. For Al-Agba, this 2007 trip will be his second NCAA singles appearance in his four-year career at Troy. He reached the second round as a sophomore in 2005 and enters this season's postseason with an 18-9 overall record and is ranked No. 36 in the latest ITA singles rankings. In his second and final season playing for USC, Cvetkovic will be making his first appearance in the NCAA singles draw. Ranked No. 52 nationally, Cvetkovic holds an 18-12 overall singles record. Should Van't Hof be included in the NCAA competition, it would be the first trip to the NCAA singles action for the No. 63-ranked junior. Van't Hof holds the best singles winning percentage on the team with a 30-5 overall record. He and Cvetkovic both reached the Pac-10 Singles quarterfinals last week in Ojai, Calif.

Both the USC men and women begin their NCAA Team Championship action at home next weekend for the first and second rounds. The USC men host UC Santa Barbara at 4 p.m. on Friday (May 11) in the NCAA First Round. The USC women host Boston University at 12 p.m. on Saturday (May 12) for their first-round clash. The men's second round match is set for 3 p.m. on Saturday; and the women's second round will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday (May 13). Team winners advance to competition in Athens, Ga., held May 17-22. Individual competition follows in Athens from May 23-28.
