Los Angeles - The California Golden Bears are getting hot at the right time. Cal defeated its third ranked opponent in as many games, this time at No. 12 UCLA by a score of 3-1 on Friday afternoon at Easton Stadium. It is Cal's fifth win in its last six games.

Cal (31-27, 5-11 Pac-10) travels to Seattle for a pair of games versus Washington beginning with a 2:00 game tomorrow, followed by a 1:00 game on Sunday.

One of the key factors in Cal's recent success has been the pitching. Sophomore Lauren Frankiewciz turned in another solid effort in the circle allowing one run on four hits with six strikeouts in five innings of work to boost her record to 16-14 on the season.

The hitting has also been timely as well. Senior Alex Sutton continued to produce, just like she has all season, with two hits on four plate appearances with a run and an RBI. Junior Erika Racklin finished the afternoon 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI as well.

The Bears jumped out to an early lead in the third inning by manufacturing all three runs off of UCLA starter Anjelica Selden. Julie Meyer, who was hit by a pitch to start the inning, advanced to second base after Taylor Kelly flied out to center field. Sutton then delivered a double to left field allowing Meyer to score. Racklin followed with a triple to center field, plating Sutton, giving Cal a 2-0 lead. After Christina Schallig drew a walk, Gina Leomiti laid down a bunt allowing Racklin to score from third, pushing the Cal lead to 3-0.

UCLA (33-14, 9-7 Pac-10) responded in the bottom half of the inning after Jaisa Creps hit a solo home run off of Frankiewicz, trimming the Cal lead to 3-1.

The Bruins threatened in the sixth and seventh innings, but freshman Marissa Drewrey, who relieved Frankiewicz in the sixth, prevented any sort of rally to preserve the Cal victory and earn her third save of the year. UCLA stranded three runners (two in scoring position) over the final two innings.
