#12 Bruin Softball Shuts Out #15 Stanford, 3-0
May 5, 2007
LOS ANGELES - Megan Langenfeld tossed a complete-game, four-hit shutout and Lisa Dodd knocked a two-run homer as 12th-ranked UCLA shutout 15th-ranked Stanford on Saturday afternoon at Easton Stadium, 3-0.
UCLA improves to 34-14, 10-7 Pac-10, while Stanford falls to 31-16-1, 6-10-1 Pac-10.
The Bruins threatened in the second inning as Whitney Holum and Kaila Shull singled with two outs, and a walk to Julie Burney loaded the bases. However, Tara Henry flied out to center field to end the threat and keep the game scoreless.
UCLA broke through in the fifth inning as Henry opened the frame with a single to left and went to second on a sac bunt by Krista Colburn. Jaisa Creps put the Bruins on the scoreboard with a sharp single to center to bring home Henry. Dodd then gave UCLA some breathing room as she knocked her 13th homer of the year for a 3-0 lead.
Stanford managed just one hit offensively through the first five innings off Langenfeld, but tried to rally in the sixth with a pair of singles. Langenfeld coaxed a lazy fly ball to left and a grounder to third to get out of the inning en route to eventually earning her seventh shutout victory of the season.
Seven different Bruins knocked base hits in the win, with Henry the only UCLA player getting two hits. Colburn walked twice in her four plate appearances for the Bruins. Langenfeld allowed just the four hits, all singles, with no walks and six strikeouts to improve to 11-1 on the season. Missy Penna (22-9) took the loss for Stanford, allowing eight hits and three runs with four walks and one strikeout in six innings.
UCLA wraps up the weekend, as well as its regular season home slate, with a 1 p.m. single game on Sunday against Stanford. Eight Bruin seniors, Jaisa Creps, Kristen Dedmon, Lisa Dodd, Tara Henry, Whitney Holum, Jodie Legaspi, Celina Rubalcaba and Shana Stewart, will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
