Cowles Goes Deep Twice to Lead No. 9 Softball Over No. 18 Oregon 8-0

May 5, 2007

EUGENE, Ore. - Three home runs, two from Mindy Cowles and a three-hit complete game shutout from Katie Burkhart launched the No. 9 Sun Devil softball team past the No. 18 Oregon Ducks 8-0 in six innings Saturday afternoon in Eugene. The Sun Devils are now 47-13 overall and 11-6 in conference play while Oregon falls to 39-16 overall and 4-13 in the Pac-10.

The Sun Devils started out on the right foot as they tacked one on the board in the first with Mindy Cowles taking a 2-0 pitch deep to left field for her 13th home run of the season, upping the Devils 1-0.

The Ducks threatened in the fifth inning as a single off a bloop hit that rolled fair allowed a runner on before Lovena Chaput walked to put runners on first and second before a hard hit ball to first from pinch-hitter Courtney Shlee was bobbled first but recovered by Ashley Muenz to make a tag out at first to end the inning with the Devils unscathed.

Mindy Cowles decided in the sixth inning though that one long balls just wasn't going to cut it as she launched a 2-1 solo shot into the right center field batting cages for her second home run on the day and 14th of the season to put the score at 2-0. Bianca Cruz came up after to line a shot to third for a single before Ashley Muenz joined the home run derby taking the first pitch she saw deep to center field to plate two. An error, wild pitch, and two hits later brought around another two as well, with a sacrifice fly adding another rounding out the sixth with a score of 8-0.

The Sun Devils and Ducks have one more head-to-head to go on the year as they set to face off in their final game of their Pac-10 series tomorrow in Eugene at 1 p.m. PT.
