Dawgs Knock Off No. 8 OSU, 9-6
May 5, 2007
SEATTLE - Catcher Joey Dunn collected three hits and drove in four runs as the Washington baseball team posted its second straight win over No. 8 Oregon State Saturday, beating the Beavers, 9-6, in game two of a three-game, Pac-10 series at Husky Ballpark.
UW junior Elliott Cribby (1-1) picked up the win in his first start of the season. Over his six innings, Cribby allowed four runs (three earned) on eigth hits, walking one and fanning two. OSU starter Joe Paterson (6-5) took the loss, surrendering seven runs on 12 hits over four and one-third innings.
The Huskies improved to 23-20 overall and 8-6 in the Pac-10 Conference while the Beavers, the defending NCAA champs, fell to 34-11 and 6-8 in league play.
Oregon State opened the scoring in the first when Jason Ogata's line drive to center got past Michael Burgher and rolled all the way to the wall, allowing Ogata to come all the way around for the first inside-the-park homer in the 10-year history of Husky Ballpark.
The Huskies answered with one of their own in the bottom of the first as Burgher walked and eventually came in on a two-out single from Curt Rindal.
OSU took the lead back in the fourth. Darwin Barney reached on a two-out single and then took second on an errant pickoff throw from Cribby. Drew George followed with a single, driving in Barney to make it a 2-1 Beavers lead.
In the fifth, OSU's Chris Hopkins tripled and, after a walk to put runners at the corners with one out, scored on a single from Mitch Canham. Mike Lissman followed Canham's hit with a sacrifice fly to increase the Beaver lead to 4-1.
However, the Huskies posted five runs in the bottom of the fifth, using six singles and a hit batter to move in front. Ty Rasmussen and Bradley Boyer both singled to drive in runs before Danny Cox was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home another. Dunn followed with a two-run single to give the Huskies their first lead at 6-4. With Mark Grbavac on in place of Paterson, the UW re-loaded the bases and a seventh run came in when Matt Hague reached on a fielder's choice.
The Huskies were at it again in the sixth. After a double and two walks loaded the bases with one out, Dunn came through with a two-run single to center field for his third hit and third and fourth RBI of the day.
OSU got a run in the eighth when Jordan Lennerton singled and scored on a single from George. The Beavers went on to load the bases with two outs, bringing the tying run to the plate in Ogata. Brandon McKerney hit Ogata with a 2-2 pitch to force in another run, but Nick Hagadone came on and struck out Canham on a called third strike to end the inning.
The Beavers loaded the bases on two walks and a single in the ninth, but Hagadone struck out pinch hitter Lonnie Lechelt to end the game and pick up his eighth save.
The Huskies, who beat OSU 6-2 Friday night at Safeco Field, will seek the sweep Sunday in a 1:00 p.m. game. The game will air live in the Seattle area on KKNW AM-1150.
