May 5, 2007
LOS ANGELES - Cody Decker hit two home runs and left-hander Tim Murphy recorded nine strikeouts through seven innings to lead the No. 22 UCLA baseball team past California, 7-2, in a Pac-10 contest Saturday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The victory handed UCLA a series victory against the visiting Golden Bears (23-24, 7-10 Pac-10).
The Bruins (27-18, 12-2 Pac-10) have now won 19 of their last 23 games, including 10 of the past 12 contests. UCLA has captured each of its last seven home Pac-10 series.
Decker's two-home-run game marked UCLA's second such performance in as many days. Gabe Cohen belted two round-trippers in Friday evening's 13-6 win over the visiting Golden Bears. Decker previously hit two home runs in a 16-11 victory at Stanford on March 31, 2007.
Left-hander Tim Murphy (4-2) improved to 4-0 in Pac-10 play, striking out nine in seven innings. The sophomore from Vista, Calif., allowed just one run off four hits in his eighth career start.
California right-hander Alex Rollin (7-4) was tagged with the loss, allowing five runs off three hits through five innings. Rollin issued six walks and recorded four strikeouts.
Decker delivered a two-run homer with two outs in the first inning to give UCLA a 2-0 lead. With two runners on base in the third inning, the Santa Monica, Calif., resident drilled a 3-and-1 pitch over the left field fence to hand the Bruins a 5-0 advantage.
California got on the board on an RBI-single by third baseman Brett Munster in the seventh inning.
Cohen hit a two-run home run, his team-leading 12th blast of the year, in the bottom of the eighth inning to give UCLA a 7-1 lead. Cohen's eighth-inning homer was his third in the Bruins' last two games.
UCLA and California conclude their three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. The Bruins will send left-hander Gavin Brooks to the mound. California left-hander Craig Bennigson will start on the hill for the Golden Bears.
Game Notes: With his two home runs, Cody Decker became the first Bruin to eclipse the 10 home run plateau since Ryan McCarthy belted 15 round-trippers in 2004...UCLA improved to 7-1 when Tim Murphy starts on the hill; Murphy has registered 51 strikeouts and just 14 walks in 40.2 innings as a starting pitcher...the Bruins have amassed a 17-4 record with Jermaine Curtis in the lineup...Garett Claypool notched his third save, inducing a fly out with the bases loaded in the ninth inning.
