Beavs Avoid Sweep With 8-2 Win Over UW
May 6, 2007
SEATTLE - Oregon State designated hitter Jason Ogata drove in four runs, including three with a crucial bases-loaded double as the eighth-ranked Beavers avoided a weekend sweep with an 8-2 win over Washington Sunday at Husky Ballpark.
OSU improved to 35-11 overall and 7-8 in the Pac-10 with the victory while the Huskies fell to 23-21 and 8-7 in conference play. The Huskies still retain sole possession of fourth place in the Pac-10, four games back of first-place UCLA.
Beavers freshman Jorge Reyes (4-0) picked up the win, going a career-long seven innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits. Husky starter Jorden Merry saw his record drop to 6-6 in the loss. He gave up four runs on seven hits in his three and one-third innings.
After three quick, scoreless innings, the Beavers' offense broke things open in the fourth as the first five hitters of the inning hit safely. Mitch Canham led off with a double, and after a Darwin Barney single, scored on a single from Jordan Lennerton, who was out trying to get to second on a throw to third base. However, after Mike Lissman and Chris Hopkins each drove in a run with a single, giving OSU a 3-0 lead, Ogata capped the rally with a two-out, three-run double to the gap in right-center, making it 6-0.
OSU added a run in the top of the sixth when Ogata singled to drive in Joey Wong.
Washington got on the board for the first time in the bottom of the sixth. After Brian Pearl walked, junior Matt Hague extended his hitting streak to 16 games with an RBI double to left field. After moving to third on a passed ball, Hague scored on a wild pitch to cut the Beavers lead to 7-2.
The Beavers tacked on their eighth run in the seventh on an RBI single from Drew George.
Ogata, a transfer from LSU, finished the day 3-for-4 with the four runs batted in. Barney added three hits, including a pair of doubles. Bradley Boyer was the only Husky with more than one hit, finishing 2-for-4.
The Huskies continue the homestand Tuesday (6:30 p.m.) and Wednesday (3:00 p.m.) as Portland visits for a pair of non-conference games. Next weekend, the Huskies travel to Stanford for a three-game, Pac-10 series. All five of those games will air live in the Seattle area on KKNW AM-1150.
