Bidleman Fifth in Pac-10 Decathlon

May 6, 2007

STANFORD, Calif. - Washington senior Blake Bidleman on Sunday scored the Huskies' first four points of the 2007 Pac-10 Championships at Stanford's Cobb Track and Angell Field, placing fifth in the decathlon. The two-day multi-events competition, including UW decathletes Bidleman and Corey Fredericks, and heptathletes Liz Fuller and Daria Amiad-Pavlov, concluded Sunday.

In seventh place at the conclusion of the first five events Saturday, Bidleman surged to fifth Sunday with season-best marks in the pole vault (13-11 ¼) and javelin (142-3), lifting the senior to a final total of 6,865 points. Bidleman's finish was the highest by a Husky decathlete at the Pac-10 meet since 2000, and put the UW men in fifth place entering the full portion of the conference meet, which begins Saturday.

Arizona's Jake Arnold captured his second-consecutive Pac-10 decathlon title with a score of 7,755 points, more than 600 points - nearly a full event's worth - ahead of his nearest competitor, Oregon freshman Austin Eaton (7,123).

Fuller, meanwhile, put the UW women on the board with an eighth-place heptathlon finish, her score of 4,760 points including season-best marks in the shot put and javelin. Like Bidleman, Fuller came from back in the pack - 12th after one day of competition -- to earn a scoring finish, the first by a UW woman at Pac-10s since 2004.

Washington State's sister tandem of Diana and Julie Pickler went 1-2 in the heptathlon, scoring 6,018 and 5.790 points, respectively. Defending champion Jacquelyn Johnson of Arizona State was third at 5,706.

Sophomores Fredericks and Amiad-Pavlov, who began the day 14th and 15th, respectively, in their events, each withdrew from the competition with one event remaining for undisclosed reasons.

Those early team points will come in handy for Washington when it sends its full squads back to Stanford for the main portion of the Pac-10 Championship meet next weekend. For complete results from the 2007 Pac-10 Multi-Events, visit
