No. 22 UCLA Baseball Drops Series Finale to California, 16-0

LOS ANGELES - The No. 22 UCLA baseball team lost to California, 16-0, in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Left-hander Gavin Brooks (3-6) absorbed the loss, allowing seven runs off 10 hits in 3.1 innings. Despite dropping Sunday's contest, the Bruins won their seventh-consecutive weekend series with wins over the Golden Bears on Friday and Saturday.
California left-hander Craig Bennigson (4-3) pitched eight scoreless innings, allowing five hits while striking out six and walking two.
Sunday's loss marked the Bruins' fifth defeat in their last 24 games. UCLA (27-19, 12-3 Pac-10) holds a one game lead over Arizona State in the Pac-10 Standings.
Third baseman Jermaine Curtis finished 2-for-3 on Sunday and recorded a .400 average (4-for-10) over the weekend. Gabe Cohen tallied a .500 average (6-for-12) with three home runs, three runs and five RBI against the Golden Bears.
California (24-24, 8-10 Pac-10) was led offensively by catcher Charlie Cutler and center fielder Taylor Grigsby, who each posted 3-for-5 efforts at the plate. Four Golden Bears recorded two hits as the visitors pounded out 20 total hits.
The Golden Bears scored twice in the first and second innings and added four more runs in the third to open an 8-0 lead. California's first inning runs came off first baseman David Cooper's two-run home run home run off the right-field foul pole. The Golden Bears scored twice in the third on an RBI-triple by left fielder Jeff Kobernus and a subsequent RBI-single by center fielder Taylor Grigsby.
California added four runs in the fourth inning on four hits, an error, a walk and a wild pitch. Leading 8-0, right fielder Blake Smith belted his fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to right field. The Golden Bears scored twice in the seventh and tallied five runs in the ninth inning.
UCLA returns to action at Pepperdine on Tuesday, May 8, in a non-conference clash. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. at Eddy D. Field Stadium in Mailbu, Calif.
Game Notes: Right-hander Jason Zinser made his collegiate debut in the ninth inning, allowing two runs and striking out one in one inning of relief...the Bruins have won seven-consecutive three-game weekend series for the first time in program history...left-hander Justin Uribe made his second collegiate pitching appearance.
