Stanford Rips 10 Hits; Tops No. 12 UCLA

Los Angeles, Calif. - Freshman Alissa Haber and sophomore Missy Penna stepped up for the Stanford softball team, and helped the Cardinalupset the No. 12 UCLA Bruins today at Easton Stadium in Los Angeles. Haber went 4-for-4 with her team-leading13th double of the season, while Penna allowed just one run on three hits and picked up her 23rd win of the season.With the win, the Cardinal takes series with the Bruins for the third-straight season, and improves to 32-16-1 overall,7-10-1 Pac-10. UCLA falls to 34-15, 10-8 Pac-10.
The Cardinal left two runners on in the first inning, but were able to strike for the first time in 29 inningson their second offensive chance. Junior Erin Howe singled to left field to lead off the rally, and advanced tosecond on a successful sacrifice bunt by Rosey Neill. With two outs, Missy Penna stepped up and squeezed a singlethrough the middle, scoring Howe from second base.
Freshman Alissa Haber helped the Cardinal add two more to the board in the fourth inning, driving her third hitof the game through the right side. Missy Penna began the inning with her second hit of the game, and beat out thethrow to second base on an fielder's choice by Jackie Rinehart. A sacrifice bunt by Tricia Aggabao put two runnersin scoring position, and Haber's two-RBI single brought them around.
The Bruins pulled one run closer in their half of the fourth inning, however. Singles by Jodie Legaspi and MeganLangenfeld put two on for UCLA, and an ensuing walk by Kaila Shull put Penna in a bases-loaded, one-out jam. TheBruins put Legaspi across on a ground out to shortstop, and brought senior Tara Henry to the plate. Henry put downa hard chopper, but Penna leapt to snag the ball and throw her out at first.
Stanford added a little more insurance in the seventh inning, as Haber helped the Cardinal put one more on the board.The Cardinal freshman collected her fourth hit of the game with a double off the wall in rightcenter to start things off for the Cardinal. On the next at bat, Michelle Smith singled through the right side toearn her team-leading 37th RBI of the year.
The Cardinal is back in action on Tuesday in a non-conference game at UC Davis, and returns to Smith FamilyStadium on Thursday to begin the squad's final Pac-10 series against Oregon and Oregon State.
