WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - ARIZONA sophomore outfielder T.J. Steele has been named the Pacific-10 Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while the Wildcats' sophomore right-handed pitcher Preston Guilmet has been named Pitcher of the Week for May 1-7, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Steele, of Tucson, Ariz., batted a team-high .786 (11-for-14) with two doubles, three home runs, a team-best eight RBI and five runs scored to help lead Arizona to a three-game non-conference sweep of Liberty. He slugged at a 1.571 clip for the weekend and posted a .824 on base percentage in the series for an astronomical OPS of 2.395. His efforts improved his season batting average 37 points from .321 heading into the weekend to its current .358 level. In Friday's 16-2 win, Steele went 4-for-5 with a double, a RBI and a run scored. He topped that in Saturday's 16-3 win with a pair of home runs, a career-high five RBI and three runs scored and finished the contest 5-for-6. Steele, who has hit seven home runs this season for Arizona, completed last year without a single homer in 51 games played.

Guilmet, of Citrus Heights, Calif., tossed seven shutout innings in a one-hit start against Liberty for his ninth win of the year. The right-hander held the Flames hitless for 5 2/3 innings before finally giving up a two-out single in the sixth. He tossed seven scoreless innings in the start to put his first loss of the season, which he suffered last weekend at UCLA, behind him and lower his Pac-10-leading ERA 1.68 for the year. He finished the start with six strikeouts and no walks on a season-low 86 pitches.

The Player of the Week honor is the first of Steele's career, while it is the 49th such honor for Arizona. The Pitcher of the Week honor is the fourth for Guilmet both this season and of his career and marks the 37th selection all-time for the Wildcats. Guilmet is just the eighth player in Pac-10 history to garner the honor four times in a single season with the last being USC's Sean Etherton in 1997. This marks the third time this season that a single school swept the Player and Pitcher of the Week honors (March 20 - Arizona State; April 24 - Washington State).
