Cal Baseball Defeats San Jose State, 7-6, in 11 Innings

May 8, 2007

BERKELEY, CALIF. - Senior third baseman Brett Munster knocked the game-winning double down the third base line with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning to lift the Cal baseball team to a 7-6 victory over San Jose State Tuesday afternoon at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears improved their record to 25-24 overall and the Spartans dipped to 27-23.

Cal freshman Blake Smith was hit by a Loren Moneypenny pitch to lead off the 11th. Smith was then sacrificed to second base by sophomore outfielder Ryan Hanlon, setting up Munster's heroics. Moneypenny (3-9) had been effective prior to the 11th, pitching 4.1 innings with three hits, one run, one walk and four strikeouts. Smith ended up being the winning pitcher for the Bears, throwing the 10th and 11th innings with no hits, no runs, no walks and a strikeout.

Cal seemed to have the game under control until the Spartans scored four runs with two outs in the top of the ninth behind a two-run double by Justin Santich-Hughes, an RBI double by pinch hitter Brody Massman and the game-tying RBI single by Chris Balatico to tie the contest, 6-6.

The Bears had started the day's scoring by putting up three runs in the bottom of the first inning on Smith's three-run homer off of San Jose State starter Brandon Hennessey. Meanwhile, Cal was getting a strong start from sophomore right-hander Tyson Ross (5.0 innings, two hits, one run, no walks, six strikeouts). The Bears added a run in the fourth when Smith led off the inning with a double and ended up scoring on Munster's grounder to short, and two runs in the fifth on RBI singles by sophomore catcher Charlie Cutler and freshman outfielder Jeff Kobernus.

The Spartans had gotten back into the game by scoring runs in the fifth inning on John Shaffer's RBI double, and a run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Ryan Angel, before sending the contest into extra-innings with four runs in the ninth.

Besides getting the win in relief, Smith was 2-for-4 with a double and a three-run homer. Cutler was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Kobernus was 2-for-5 with an RBI.
