Huskies Coast To 14-5 Win Over Pilots

May 9, 2007

SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team scored seven runs in the fourth and coasted to a 14-5 win over Portland Wednesday at Husky Ballpark, completing a sweep of a two--game, non-conference series.

Sophomore lefty Tyler Cheney (2-3), who also made his first career start as a hitter, came on in relief in the fifth to pick up the win. He threw one and two-thirds innings of no-hit relief. At the plate, Cheney went 0-for-2 with a run scored as the starting designated hitter.

After being held off the scoreboard in the first two innings, the Huskies (25-21) exploded for seven runs in the third. Danny Cox doubled and scored on a Matt Hague single. After Curt Rindal singled to put two on, Rasmussen drove in another run with a base hit. A hit batter loaded the bases and a third run scored when Bradley Boyer walked.

Matt Stevens followed with an RBI single to left and two errors on the play led to a total of three runs coming around. After a walk and a second out, Cox singled to drive in Stevens, staking the Huskies to a seven-run lead.

A Boyer sacrifice fly added another in the fourth, but the Pilots (19-25) fought back in the fifth. UW starter Bryce Mooney loaded the bases on a hit batter and two walks before center fielder Cory Wiltshire belted a grand slam to right-center, only the second hit of the game for Portland, to cut the lead to 8-4.

Washington scored a ninth run in the sixth when Rasmussen scored from third on a passed ball. Portland answered in the seventh when Chase Powell homered to center, making it 9-5.

In the bottom of the seventh, Boyer's two-run double and a two-run homer from Matt Stevens highlighted a five-run inning for the Huskies.

Boyer finished the day 1-for-1 with four runs and four RBI. Cox went 3-for-5 while Stevens was 2-for-5 with three runs batted in.

Portland's Sean Sargent (1-6), the second of eight Pilots pitchers to work in the game, suffered the loss.

Next up for Washington is a three-game series at Stanford Friday through Sunday. While Saturday and Sunday's games will both air live on KKNW AM-1150, Friday's game will be available only over the internet at Sunday's game will air live on television on CSTV.
