BERKELEY - Three members of the California women's tennis team earned All-Pac-10 honors, as announced by the conference today. Senior Zsuzsanna Fodor and junior Susie Babos won the Pac-10 Doubles Team of the Year award. In addition, Babos and Fodor were named all-conference first-team selections. Freshman Nina Henkel earned second-team honors.
Babos and Fodor make up the first Golden Bear duo to win this doubles award in the history of the program. The Hungarians have spent much of the season ranked in the Top 5 of the ITA rankings and currently stand in fifth. Babos and Fodor have a 35-9 record this season, 20-5 in dual play. The two also captured the ITA Northwest Regional doubles title last fall.
In singles, Babos and Fodor shined all year long on Cal's top two courts. Babos, the 2006 NCAA singles champion, collected an overall singles record of 34-10, 18-6 in the dual season, and played primarily on the No. 1 court during the spring. She is currently ranked fourth in the ITA singles rankings. No. 12 Fodor, who played mostly on the second court, has amassed a singles record of 30-14 overall and 17-7 in the dual season.
Henkel made a huge impact in her first year as a Bear. The Germany native recorded the most victories out of all Cal players during the spring campaign, notching an overall record of 36-11, 22-4 in dual play and 19-3 on the third court. Henkel, who is currently ranked No. 22 in the ITA singles rankings, won the ITA Northwest Regional singles title last fall.
Cal hopes to win more accolades in the next two weeks in the NCAA championships. The Bears face Clemson on Friday, May 18, at 3 p.m. (PT) in Athens, Ga., in the round of 16.
