Bruch, Wire Named Second Team All-Pac-10
May 15, 2007
Sophomore Matt Bruch and freshman Richard Wire today were named Second-Team All-Pacific-10 Conference. Bruch, the two-time conference singles champion, received All-Pac-10 recognition for the second straight season while Wire, from Essex, England, is one of only two freshman to earn all conference honors.
Bruch rebounded from an injury-riddled season to win five straight matches and earn his second straight Pac-10 singles title. Bruch, who beat three nationally-ranked opponents on his way to the conferenc crown on April 29, also played his way into the NCAA Championships. He will compete in the NCAA's singles competition beginning May 23 in Athens, Georgia.
Bruch also teammed with Blake Muller to win the Pac-10 doubles championship. He and Muller, who are currently the No. 12 ranked doubles team in the country, will compete in the NCAA doubles competition in Athens.
Wire came to Stanford as a highly-touted prep from The Leys School in England. With Bruch suffering from injuries, Wire played No. 1 for much of the season for the Cardinal. He won nine of his final 13 dual matches.
