Mike Roberts Named Assistant Basketball Coach
May 16, 2007
BERKELEY - Mike Roberts, a former forward at Indiana and graduate assistant at Texas Tech who spent this past season as video coordinator for the California men's basketball team, has been named an assistant coach for the Golden Bears, head coach Ben Braun announced Wednesday.
'I'm excited to have Mike on board,' Braun said. 'I think his experience at Indiana, Texas Tech and Cal have helped him prepare for this opportunity. I think Mike has a great rapport with our players, coaching staff and recruits.'
As an undergraduate, Roberts was a member of the Indiana basketball team for five seasons, playing for Mike Davis and helping the Hoosiers to three NCAA Tournaments, including a national runner-up finish in 2002, and one NIT. A two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and recipient of a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, he served as team captain as a senior in 2004-05.
'Obviously, I feel very fortunate to be offered this position at Cal, and I am excited to get to work and help our program,' said Roberts. 'I feel my experience working with the players and the comfort level I have with the staff will be a big benefit.'
Roberts' duties will include assisting Braun with Cal's post players, overseeing the team's academic program and recruiting, as well as continuing his work with scouting and preparation.
After earning his bachelor's degree in history with a certificate in management from Indiana, Roberts spent the 2005-06 season as a graduate assistant under Bob Knight at Texas Tech. While with the Red Raiders, he aided the coaching staff in practices, supervised academic progress of the players and was an analyst for the team's radio and TV broadcasts. Roberts received his master's degree in interdisciplinary studies from Texas Tech in 2006.
Roberts joined the Cal staff last year, serving as the program's video coordinator, where he was involved in game preparation, self scouting, breaking down game film and other administrative duties.
Born and raised in Terre Haute, Ind., Roberts and his family moved to Eugene, Ore., while he was in high school. He graduated from South Eugene HS before attending New Hampton Prep in New Hampshire for one year.
Roberts replaces Dennis Gates, who departed for an assistant coach position at Northern Illinois.
