ALL EIGHT PAC-10 TEAMS QUALIFY FOR NCAA TOURNAMENT
For the fifth time in Pac-10 history, all eight Conference softball teams are heading to the postseason. Pac-10 Champions ARIZONA earned the No. 1 overall seed and will host a regional for the fifth consecutive season. WASHINGTON earned a No. 6 seed and will travel to Lincoln, Neb. ARIZONA STATE is seeded No. 7 overall and opens up in Provo, Utah. No. 12 UCLA hosts its own regional, while STANFORD is unseeded but is the third Pac-10 team to host. OREGON STATE travels to Ann Arbor, Mich., OREGON will begin in Columbia, S.C., and CALIFORNIA is destined for the Tuscaloosa Regional in Alabama. The Sun Devils and the Cardinal open up on Tuesday, May 17, while all others begin on Friday, May 18.
All eight Pac-10 teams qualified for the tournament previously in 1999, 2000, `03, and `05. Last season, seven of eight teams made the cut, and all seven won their Regional, an NCAA record for one Conference. Arizona, Arizona State, Oregon State, and UCLA all reached the Women's College World Series in 2006, with Arizona defeating Northwestern in the Championship Series to win its seventh NCAA title. Pac-10 teams have accounted for 18 NCAA titles in the sport's 25 years. UCLA has won 10 championships, Arizona seven, and California one.
The Pac-10's eight entrants is the most of any Conference, followed by the SEC with seven, Big 12 with six, and the ACC and Big West with five each.

ARIZONA (15-5-1, 39-12-1): Pac-10 Champions for the 10th time in program history, the Wildcats will host an NCAA Regional for the fifth consecutive year and the 13th time in the past 15 years ... the defending NCAA Champions earned the No. 1 overall seed thanks in large part to its No. 1 RPI and strength of schedule ... the Wildcats face Howard in the first game, with Mississippi State and Pacific in the other half of the bracket. Arizona has only faced Pacific in postseason play before, defeating the Tigers twice ... UA is 58-8 all-time in NCAA Regional play ... Arizona was 3-0 in winning its region last year, and was 10-2 overall in postseason play in winning its seventh national title ... Arizona went 1-2 in its final regular season contests, losing to UCLA, 7-4, on Thursday, then splitting two games with Washington, losing on Sunday but picking up an eight-inning win in the finale. The consecutive defeats were Arizona's first since Mar. 10-11 at Baylor ... sophomore Sam Banister did her part to send Arizona's three seniors (Kristie Fox, Caitlin Lowe, Chelsie Mesa) off with a win on Senior Day on Saturday, hitting a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the 8th to beat Washington, 5-4 ... junior Taryne Mowatt picked up the win, her 31st of the year to lead the Pac-10. Mowatt passed Nancy Evans on Saturday for fifth place in career strikeouts at Arizona. Mowatt now has 741 career K's ... UA's leading thief, Lowe made it 46 successful swipes this year without being caught. Lowe is second in steals in Pac-10 history with 153, trailing UCLA's Natasha Watley, who swiped 158. Lowe's 46 thefts lead the NCAA ... The Wildcats lead the Conference this season with a .453 batting average (29-for-64) with the bases loaded ... in other Lowe-related records, the senior is now seventh on the Pac-10 hits list with 337 and ninth in runs scored with 236, having recently passed Stanford's Jessica Mendoza in both categories.
ARIZONA STATE (13-8, 49-15): The Sun Devils went 2-1 in its final homestand, locking up sole possession of second place in the Pac-10 with a 7-4 win over UCLA in the Saturday finale. ASU's 13 Pac-10 wins is its most since a 13-11 record in 1993. The runner-up finish is the best for the Sun Devils since 1991. Coupled with last year's 11-10 Conference record, the Sun Devils have now had consecutive winning seasons in the Pac-10 for the first time in program history ... Arizona State earned the No. 7 seed and will travel to Provo, Utah for regional play. ASU faces Southern Utah on Thursday as Provo is one of two Regionals to hold play from Thursday-Saturday. BYU and Cal Poly make up the rest of the Regional ... the Sun Devils won their Regional with a 3-0 record last year, and were 6-2 overall in reaching the WCWS ... sophomore Kaitlin Cochran homered nearly every time she saw a pitch to hit last weekend, going deep once in each of ASU's three games. For the week, Cochran only had four official at-bats, going 3-for-4, all home runs, driving in five runs, scoring five herself, and drawing six walks. Her slugging percentage was an incredible 3.000 and on-base percentage was .909 ... Cochran concluded the regular season as the nationa's leading hitter, sporting a .506 batting average. She also ranks fourth nationally in slugging (.931) and eighth in runs per game (1.09 - 70 runs) ... junior second baseman Mindy Cowles recently became the new career home run leader at Arizona State, passing the old record of 40 held by Phelan Wright (2001-04). Cowles now has 42 for her career. She had four home runs over a three game span against the Oregon schools from May 4-6 ... junior Katie Burkhart upped her Pac-10 leading strikeout total to 429 over the weekend, breaking her own ASU single-season record. Burkhart recently passed Arizona's Jennie Finch (1999-02) for seventh place in Pac-10 career strikeouts with 1,069 ... Bianca Cruz's 36 two-out RBI are 13 more than the next best total in the Pac-10.
CALIFORNIA (7-14, 33-30): The Golden Bears earned a postseason invitation for the 22nd straight season, the longest active streak in the Pac-10 and second longest in the nation behind Fresno State's 26. Cal heads to Tuscaloosa, Ala. as the third seed and will face Florida State on Friday at 1:30 p.m. PDT. No. 11 Alabama is the top-seed and Tennessee Tech rounds out the field ... Cal and Florida State have an extensive NCAA history. The Bears last faced FSU in the 2004 Women's College World Series and came away with a 4-2 win. Cal also defeated the Seminoles in the '02 WCWS and took 2-of-3 from FSU in the 2001 NCAA Regional. Cal is 10-1 against Florida State since 1991 ... last season, Cal swept through its Regional with a 3-0 record, before losing the deciding game three of its Super Regional vs. Oregon State ... Cal dropped two of three games last week but won Saturday's season finale, 4-2, over Oregon. ... sophomore Lauren Frankiewicz earned her team-leading 17th win vs. the Ducks, holding the Pac-10's best-hitting team to just two runs (one earned) on eight hits over seven innings, and striking out four ... Cal equaled a school mark with its 46th home run of the season (courtesy of Alex Sutton's two-run shot on May 11), tying the previous mark of 46 home runs set in 2004 ... after beginning Pac-10 play 2-11, Cal went 5-3 down the stretch to secure its NCAA bid ... senior Sutton has been one of the best clutch hitters in the Conference this season. She is second with 23 two-out RBI, and is hitting .432 (19-for-44) with two outs, third in the league.
OREGON (7-14, 42-17): The Ducks return to the postseason after a one-year absense, earning a trip to Columbia, South Carolina where they will face Penn State in the first round of the Columbia Regional. 15th-seeded North Carolina State and host-school South Carolina round out the regional field. Oregon is the second seed in the group ... Oregon's 42 wins this season tie for the second most in Oregon history, also accomplished in 2004. Oregon's single season record, 54 victories, was set in 1989 ... Oregon has a 1-0 edge over Penn State in postseason play, defeating the Nittany Lions in a 2003 Regional meeting ... the Ducks closed with a 2-1 week, defeating Stanford and splitting two games with Cal. Sophomore Sari-Jane Jenkins provided much of the offense, going 7-for-11 (.636) during the set with four runs scored. Jenkins is the Pac-10 leader in doubles with 16 ... freshman Jennifer Salling has turned in one of the best rookie campaigns in the nation. She is among 10 finalists for the USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year award, and is the only freshman among the nominees. Salling's .483 batting average is third in the nation and her 0.864 slugging percentage ranks seventh nationally. The freshman has smashed Oregon's single season RBI record with 68 and counting. The previous record was 47 by Katie Mackey in 1999. Her 44 walks is also a UO record ... senior Suzie Barnes broke two school records this season: runs with 60 (2nd in Pac-10), and stolen bases with 40 (2nd in Pac-10). She ranks 19th nationally in runs per game ... Oregon is far outpacing the rest of the Pac-10 in stolen bases with 120, a new team record. Arizona is second with 91 ... senior Ann Marie Topps established a new UO home run mark with her Pac-10-leading 18 long balls ... the Ducks put together an 18-game win streak from Feb. 9-Mar. 2.
OREGON STATE (10-11, 39-21): The Beavers earned their ninth consecutive postseason appearance and will head to Ann Arbor, Mich. where they are the second seed and will open against Louisville. The other half of the region includes host and No. 9 seed Michigan, and Eastern Michigan ... Oregon State was the runner-up in the Ann Arbor Regional back in 2004, the freshman season for OSU's current crop of seniors. They lost to the Wolverines in the Regional championship game ... the Beavers are 23-14 all-time in Regional play. Last season they went 3-0 and then defeated Cal in the Super Regional to advance to the program's first Women's College World Series where they finished tied for seventh ... Oregon State brings great momentum into the tournament, after picking up its first three-game Pac-10 series sweep in the regular season finale last week. OSU's offense was in high gear in the Bay Area, scoring 10, eight, and nine runs in a win at Cal and two at Stanford. The 10 runs was the most OSU had scored in Pac-10 play at the most since Mar. 28 ... Oregon State finished in sole possession of fifth place in the Pac-10, winning at least 10 Conference games for the third straight year ... senior Mia Longfellow was named Pac-10 Player of the Week for the first time in her career this week. Against the Bay Area schools, Longfellow hit 7-for-9 (.778) and scored seven of OSU's 27 runs. Her on-base percentage was .800 ... senior Brianne McGowan picked up the win in each game last week, extending her school record for career wins to 98. McGowan is OSU's all-time leader in wins, saves, shutouts, and strikeouts ... on Apr. 29, Longfellow set a pair of Beaver milestones, passing Jodi Chmielewski (1996-99) in both career hits and singles to stand as the all-time OSU hits leader. Longfellow now has 235 hits, 185 of them singles ... junior Cambria Miranda leads the Pac-10 with six triples, and is seventh with 47 runs scored ... OSU went a span of 32 games (Feb. 16-Apr. 6) without allowing more than four runs in a game ... the Beavers boast the Pac-10's best defense and third-best in the nation. Their fielding percentage is .978 and they have caught 34.9 percent of opposing base stealers, best in the league.
STANFORD (7-13-1, 32-19-1): The Cardinal received an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships and will be making a 10th consecutive postseason appearance. Stanford was chosen to host their Regional and will face Fresno State in the first game on Thursday. The Palo Alto and Provo Regionals are the only two to open play on May 17. Stanford is the No. 2 seed in the Regional, with national No. 10 seed LSU and Cal State Northridge completing the field ... last season Stanford won the Fresno Regional with a 4-1 record, before falling to Alabama in the Super Regional ... the Cardinal had trouble in last week's final regular season homestand, going 0-3 against the Oregon schools to finish 6th in the Conference standings ... junior Tricia Aggabao was the steadiest Cardinal at the plate last week, hitting .600 (6-for-10) with three runs scored and an RBI ... freshman Alissa Haber has been the offensive star for the Cardinal this season. Haber is 10th in the Pac-10 with a .373 batting average, and ninth with a .462 on-base percentage. Her numbers improved even more in Pac-10 play. Haber was sixth in the league with a .391 average and was also in the top-10 in slugging and on-base percentages, hits and doublesis fifth in Pac-10 play with a .400 batting average and ranks sixth in both slugging and on-base percentage, and her six doubles ties for first ... Haber is currently second in the Conference in average with runners on base. She is batting .492 (29-for-59) with runners on as opposed to .308 (33-for-107) with the bases empty ...junior Michelle Smith leads Stanford with eight home runs and 43 RBI. With 31 career home runs, Smith is just the fourth Cardinal to crack the 30+ plateau ... sophomore Missy Penna tied for fourth in the Pac-10 with 23 wins and held opponents to a .194 batting average. Penna already stands third in Stanford history with 455 career strikeouts. She has 276 this season.
UCLA (12-9, 36-16): The Bruins are set to make their 24th postseason appearance out of 26 Regional Tournaments. The winningest program in NCAA softball history, UCLA will begin its quest for a record 11th title at home in Los Angeles where they are the 12th overall seed. The Bruins face Loyola Marymount in their first game on Friday. Hawaii and UC Santa Barbara make up the other half of the regional ... the Bruins won their Regional last year also at home with a 3-0 record, and advanced to the Women's College World Series for the 22nd time, finishing in a tie for third ... UCLA is 67-7 all-time in NCAA Regionals, and 153-34 overall in the NCAA Tournament ... UCLA finished strong, going 2-1 on the road against Arizona and Arizona State ... freshman Megan Langenfeld was named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week as well as USA Softball National Collegiate Pitcher of the Week for her performance. Langenfeld outdueled Arizona's Taryne Mowatt and Arizona State's Katie Burkhart on back-to-back days, becoming the first pitcher in the Pac-10 this season to beat both schools in the same weekend. UCLA's 7-4 win over Arizona snapped the Wildcats' 17-game home winning streak, and gave the Bruins the series win over UA for the third straight year. Langenfeld was 2-0 with a 1.75 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 16 innings for the week ... Langenfeld has won five of UCLA's last six games ... junior Krista Colburn had two home runs and five RBI during the road trip. Colburn is fifth in the Conference in both batting average (.398) and on-base percentage (.490). Colburn entered her junior campaign as just a .288 career hitter with a .345 OBP ... senior Lisa Dodd leads the Bruins with a career-high 13 home runs. Dodd blossomed into one of the league's best hitters this season, vastly outpacing her career numbers from her first three seasons. This season Dodd is batting .382 compared to a .236 career average, slugging .704 compared to .410, and has an OBP of .486 compared to her old career .305 OBP ... senior Jodie Legaspi is now seventh at UCLA in career RBI with 154, and sixth in home runs with 42 ... junior Anjelica Selden became UCLA's career strikeout leader on Apr. 29, surpassing the 1,095 strikeouts recorded by Keira Goerl from 2001-04. Selden now has 1,104 career K's, fifth most in Pac-10 history ... the Bruins are 27-1 this season when scoring five or more runs.
WASHINGTON (12-9, 35-16): The Huskies earned a No. 1 seed in the 2007 NCAA Regional Tournament in Lincoln, Neb. The Huskies, who are seeded sixth overall among the 64-team field, will open postseason play against Creighton on Friday. Joining UW and Creighton are host Nebraska and Georgia ... Washington has faced all three of its regional foes during its 15-year history and has a 10-3 all-time record against those teams. Washington is 2-1 against Creighton, including postseason wins in 2003 (5-1) and 2005 (2-1, 11 innings) at previous Lincoln Regionals. The Huskies are 2-0 all-time against Georgia, including a 3-1 victory at the 2004 Athens Regional, while they are 5-3 against Nebraska, including a 7-6 come-from-behind victory over the Huskers at the 2005 Lincoln Regional ... the Huskies are making their 14th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament, tied with Oklahoma for the fourth-longest active streak. Washington has a 53-24 record in those games (39-8 Regionals/1-4 Super Regional/13-12 WCWS) and has advanced to the Women's College World Series seven times ... Washington finished the Pac-10 season in third place with a 12-9 record, marking its highest conference finish since 2002 (13-8, third) ... UW went 1-2 in its final road trip, losing 2-1 to Arizona State, defeating Arizona, 5-1, then losing a heartbreaker, 5-4 in eight innings, to the Wildcats on Saturday ... junior Caitlin Noble now has 603 career strikeouts, becoming just the fifth player in program history to amass 600 strikeouts ... sophomore Danielle Lawrie leads the Pac-10 with 12.20 strikeouts per game. Interestingly, despite trailing ASU's Katie Burkhart in total strikeouts by 56, Lawrie leads the league with 104 batters struck out looking ... senior Dena Tyson had a breakout final season for the Dawgs, finishing in the top-10 in six major offensive categories. Tyson's .871 slugging percentage ranked sixth nationally, and her 0.34 home runs per game average is seventh in the NCAA ... Tyson's 17 home runs this season are one more than her career total entering her senior season ... junior Ashley Charters muscled up in Pac-10 play, hitting six of her seven home runs against league competition and slugging .690 (6th in Pac-10) while still maintaining her speed game. Charters' 18 runs and 15 steals in Pac-10 games ranked third and second, respectively.
