Arizona's Guilmet Blanks UW, 7-0
May 18, 2007
TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona ace Preston Guilmet threw a complete-game, three-hit shutout to lead the 14th-ranked Wildcats to a 7-0 win over the Washington baseball team in the first of a three-game, Pac-10 series Friday night at Kindall Field.
The Huskies had played 120 games since last being shut out late in the 2005 season. Washington dropped to 27-24 overall and 9-10 in the Pac-10 with the loss, but still remain in sole possession of fourth place in the standings, thanks to Oregon State's loss on Friday. Arizona moved into a tie for second place with UCLA, improving to 37-13 and 12-7 in the conference.
Guilmet improved to 11-1 with the win, his fifth complete-game effort of the year. He allowed a double and two singles, plus two walks, while striking out seven.
Husky starter Jason Erickson (4-2) suffered the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits over five innings.
The Wildcats used only one hit in the bottom of the first to score four runs. After an error, a hit batter and a walk loaded the bases, Erickson struck out the next Arizona hitter before walking Brad Glenn to force in one run. Center fielder T.J. Steele followed with a three-run triple to left-center field, giving the home team an early 4-0 edge.
In the third, Arizona added a run when Bill Rhinehard doubled and scored on a single from Glenn.
The Wildcats added singled tallies in the fifth and sixth. In the fifth, designated hitter Oliver Padre drove in a run with a bases-loaded groundout. In the sixth, Mike Weldon singled and eventually came in on a single from Rhinehart.
Game two of the series is Saturday at 6:00 p.m. and the series concludes Sunday at noon. Fans can catch live audio broadcasts of both of those games on the 'Dawg Channel' at gohuskies.com.
