Bears Upset Tigers in Round of 16 in NCAA Championships
May 18, 2007
ATHENS, Ga. - For the first time since 2003, the California women's tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. The No. 10 seed Golden Bears (22-6) shut out seventh-seed Clemson, 4-0, Friday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on Friday. Cal improves its all-time NCAA Tournament record to 40-26.
'We came here to win,' Cal head coach Jan Brogan said. 'Georgia has run such an outstanding championships every time we've been here. It's even better this year, and it's great that our men's team is here with us too. We've played hard to get where we are. I'm very proud of this team.'
Just as she did in the NCAA regionals, No. 12 senior Zsuzsanna Fodor dominated in singles. Fodor defeated Carol Salge, 6-2, 6-0, to help the Bears increase their lead after winning the doubles point. Another decisive singles win came from freshman Nina Henkel. The 22nd-ranked Henkel beat Estefania Balda, 6-2, 6-1.
The match-clinching victory occurred on the fifth court. Junior Marion Ravelojaona, who did not compete in the first two rounds last weekend, knocked off Maria Brito, 7-6, 6-1. After winning a close first set that went down to the wire, Ravelojaona took control in the second set.
Despite losing the first doubles match on the top court, Cal earned victories on the second and third courts to claim the doubles point. Henkel and junior Stephanie Kusano recorded the first doubles win with an 8-2 victory over Balda and Ina Hadziselimovic. Sophomores Claire Ilcinkas and Bojana Bobusic snagged the opening point, as they defeated Brito and Carol Sage, 8-6.
In the quarterfinals, Cal will take on No. 2 seed and host Georgia Sunday, May 20, at 3 p.m. (PT). The second-seed Bulldogs defeated No. 15 seed William and Mary, 4-1, earlier in the day.
'Of course the crowd here is going to be biased, but it's also going to be fair,' Brogan said. 'They appreciate good tennis. Whenever we've been here they've always been supportive. I look forward to it.'
