Final Stats

LOS ANGELES - Home runs from seniors Jodie Legaspi and Lisa Dodd provided the power that UCLA needed as the Bruins completed a 6-3 victory over Loyola Marymount on the opening day of the NCAA Softball Tournament at Easton Stadium. The Bruins (36-16) will next face off against Hawai'i, (47-11) a 2-0 winner over UCSB (30-22) in a 10-inning battle to start the day. The game between UCLA and the Rainbow Wahine is scheduled for a 3:06 pm PT first pitch and will be televised live by ESPNU. LMU's Lions (45-17) will face the Gauchos at approximately 5:36 pm.

The Bruins struck first, connecting on two unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning. Dodd drew a two-out walk and went to third on an LMU throwing error that put Legaspi on first base. Megan Langenfeld followed with a double down the left field line, plating both runners to give UCLA a 2-0 lead.

Loyola Marymount answered in the top of the second inning, scoring three runs of their own on an RBI fielders choice by Chelsie Tysdal and an RBI single by Kirsten Whitt. A Bruin fielding error plated a third run, giving the Lions a 3-2 lead.

That lead was short-lived, however, as Kaila Shull led off the bottom half of the second with a triple down the right field line followed by a bloop single from Julie Burney to tie the game. Legaspi then came up to lead off the fifth inning with her 12th home run of the season to give UCLA the lead for good.

Dodd added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, connecting on a monstrous shot over the scoreboard in left field, her 14th dinger of the season, to account for the final score of 6-3.

Langenfeld improved to 14-2 on the season, striking out one and now allowing a walk during her seven innings in the circle.

Saturday's schedule will include UCLA facing off against Hawai'i at 3 pm PT, followed by a 5:30 pm match-up between LMU and UCSB. The final game of the day is scheduled to begin at 8 pm and will feature the loser of the UCLA-UH game with the winner of the LMU-UCSB contest. All games will be televised live by ESPNU with Beth Mowins and Jessica Mendoza calling the action.
