Fourth-ranked UCLA maintained its lead at the NCAA West Regional, hosted by Arizona State at the Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz.
Several teams made their move Friday, most notably USC and South Carolina, and UCLA's lead shrank from five shots to one entering the final round. The Bruins posted a 15-under par score of 273 to remain atop the leaderboard at 541 (-35). South Carolina posted a 19-under par score of 269 and was in second place at 542 (-34). USC was tied for third at 550 (-26) with Arizona State after posting a second round score of 273 (-15). The Sun Devils recorded a score of 275 (-13) on Friday. Washington and East Tennessee State were tied for fifth at 555 (-21), followed by Oregon State at 556 (-20). Arizona, Stanford and New Mexico were tied for eighth at 557 (-19).
The top 10 teams advance to the NCAA Championship, May 30-June 3 in Williamsburg, Va., following Saturday's round.
Individually, UCLA sophomore Erik Flores was tied for third place, one stroke off the lead. Flores, following yesterday's 64 (-8), posted a three-under par 69 for a 36-hole total of 133 (-11). Despite some adversity, he managed to keep his composure.
'I hit it out of bounds on No. 11, but managed to make a bogey, which was a birdie on my second ball,' said Flores. 'On my back nine [the course's front nine] my group was put on the clock [for slow play], so that got me a little out of my zone.'
Still Flores managed six birdies.
'I've been hitting it really well, and I've made my share of putts,' he continued. 'Tomorrow (Saturday), I'm going to stay aggressive all day.'
Junior Kevin Chappell fired a four-under par 68 for a two-round total of 134 (-10). He was tied for fifth place. For the second straight round, sophomore Lucas Lee began his day with an eagle. He fired a 66 (-6) and climbed into a tie for 15th, moving up 40 spots. Junior Daniel Im posted a two-under par 70 and was tied for 30th at 139 (-5). Freshman Jason Kang was tied for 50th at three-under par 141 after carding an even par 72.
USC's Jamie Lovemark and Arizona State's Benjamin Alvarado were tied for the overall lead at 12-under par 132. Lovemark fired a nine-under par 63 on Friday, and Alvarado posted a seven-under 65.
