Cal Walks Off With 4-3 Win Over USC

May 19, 2007

BERKELEY, Calif. - Cal shortstop Michael Brady led off the bottom of the ninth with his third home run of the season Saturday as the California Golden Bears moved into a tie for fourth place in the Pac-10 Conference with a 4-3 decision against the USC Trojans at Evans Diamond. Matt Gorgen earned the win for the Golden Bears with 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief as the Trojans stranded a season-high 14 runners despite 12 hits in the game.

Sophomore center fielder Nick Buss recorded his first four-hit game of the season with three singles, a double and two RBI while junior left fielder Lucas Duda went 2-for-2 with three walks. Freshman All-America candidate Grant Green (Anaheim Hills/Canyon HS) had a single in a 1-for-3 day and has now hit safely in 24 of his last 26 games.

Both teams have matching 26-24 overall records with Cal possessing a 9-10 conference mark while USC is now 8-11 in the Pac-10.

Neither starter made it out of the seventh inning as USC freshman Brad Boxberger went 6 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on nine hits with two walks and two strikeouts while Cal starter lasted 6 1/3 innings and gave up three runs on 10 hits with six walks and nine strikeouts.

The Trojans scored first in the third with a single run after Michael Torres brought Roberto Lopez home on an RBI sacrifice fly.

Michael Brady led off with a single to center in the third and then scored on Brett Jackson's RBI double down the left field line. Cutler moved Jackson to third on a groundout to first and Josh Satin moved the Golden Bears ahead, 2-1, on a sacrifice fly to right. Back-to-back doubles by Hector Estrella and Nick Buss tied the game in the top of the fourth at two apiece.

Ross got into another jam in the sixth when the bases were loaded with one out, but he stopped the Trojans again by getting Grant Green to ground into a fielder's choice for an out at home and struck out Torres to keep the game tied. Buss put the Trojans ahead, 3-2, in the seventh with a two-out single, plating Duda from second base before the Golden Bears did the same in the bottom half of the inning on Charlie Cutler's two-out single.
