Josh Satow, #6 Baseball Shut Out #16 Oregon State 3-0
May 19, 2007
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Josh Satow was nearly unhittable for eight innings, as the Sun Devils shut out the Oregon State Beavers in Corvallis 3-0. The win improves the Devils to 40-12 on the season and 16-4 in the Pac-10. It is the 28th time in school history that Arizona State has won at least 40 games and the sixth time under Pat Murphy.
Satow threw one of the best games of his career, allowing only two hits while striking out eight to improve to 10-3 on the year. Jason Jarvis recorded the final three outs of the game to pick up his ninth save of the year. Jarvis is now tops in school history for saves by a freshman, passing Mitch Dean and Zechry Zinicola.
It was a pitcher's duel from the outset, as Oregon State's Joe Paterson retired the first ten hitters he faced, while Satow set down the first eight he faced. Satow did not allow a hit until a Mitch Canham single up the middle in the sixth.
Jarred Bogany broke the scoreless tie in the fifth, homering to left field with Jason Jarvis on third to put ASU up 2-0. Eric Sogard made it 3-0 in the ninth, hammering a pitch to right field for his 10th homer of the year, a new career high.
Oregon State had a chance in the ninth, loading the bases without recording a hit. Matt Spencer began the ninth on the hill, but was removed after walking the leadoff hitter. Jarvis took over for him, but a walk, a fielder's choice and a hit batter put the winning run at the plate. With one out and the bases loaded, Jarvis induced a fly out to left, then struck out the final batter to nail down the save.
Eric Sogard had two of ASU's eight hits, including the solo homer. Jarred Bogany's home run was his first extra base hit since March 4th at Auburn, and was his first hit of any kind since April 14th against Washington State.
The Devils and Beavers will close out the series tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. from Corvallis.
