May 20, 2007
BERKELEY, CALIF. - Bolstered by a solid outing from junior right-hander Alex Rollin and a 14-hit offensive attack, the California baseball team defeated USC, 6-1, Sunday afternoon in game two of a three-game Pac-10 series at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears, who won the first game of the series, 4-3, on Saturday, improved to 27-24 overall and 10-10 in the Pac-10. USC fell to 26-25 and 8-12 in conference. The third game of the series will be played Monday, May 21 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
Rollin improved his record to 8-4 by throwing 6.1 innings with six hits, one unearned run, no walks and one strikeout. Freshman right fielder/pitcher Blake Smith replaced Rollin with one out in the seventh inning when Rollin was hit on his right pitching hand on a ball off the bat of the Trojans' Nick Buss. But Smith also pitched well for Cal, throwing the final 2.2 innings with no hits, no runs, one walk and three strikeouts.
Offensively, the Bears were led by senior third baseman Brett Munster (3-for-4, two doubles, RBI), junior second baseman Josh Satin (3-for-4, double) and sophomore first baseman David Cooper (3-for-4, double, RBI) with three hits apiece. Freshman left fielder Jeff Kobernus added two hits with an RBI on the day, and sophomore shortstop Michael Brady hit his second home run of the series, a solo shot to left field in the bottom of the eighth inning. Brady had hit the game-winning homer in the ninth inning in Saturday's 4-3 win.
The Bears had tallied two runs in the bottom of the first inning off of Trojan starter Ryan Cook (7-3, 5.1 innings, 11 hits, five runs, three earned runs, one walk, four strikeouts) when Satin had a two-out single and scored on Cooper's double to left field. Cooper then scored on freshman left fielder Jeff Kobernus' RBI single to center field for a 2-0 Cal lead.
The Trojans notched their lone run in the top of the second inning when Hector Estrella reached on an error and later scored on Matt Cusick's groundout to Cooper.
The Bears were able to come back to take control of the game by scoring a run in the bottom of the second inning on Munster's RBI double, and run in the fourth inning on a balk by USC's Cook that scored Smith, a run in the sixth inning on Brady's sacrifice bunt, and finally Brady's solo homer in the eighth inning for the final 6-1 margin.
Cal: Brady, solo home run in the eighth inning.
