Five Bruins Invited to USA Softball Women's National Team Selection Camp

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Six former Bruin softball players are on the list of invitees announced today for the 2007 USA Softball Women's National Team selection camp. The camp will be held June 11-15 at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., and will be used to select the 2007 USA Softball Women's National Team that will compete in the KFC World Cup of Softball, July 12-16 in Oklahoma City and the Pan American Games, July 20-30, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Bruins invited to the camp include 2007 senior Jodie Legaspi along with alumnae Andrea Duran, Lisa Fernandez, Tairia Mims Flowers, Amanda Freed and Natasha Watley.
A seventh Bruin alum, two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Stacey Nuveman is not participating at this camp because she and her husband are expecting their first child.
USA Softball will be looking to defend its World Cup title from 2006 and capture its sixth consecutive Pan American Games gold medal in Rio. The USA Women's National Team will also compete in the Canada Cup, June 28-July 8, in Surrey, B.C., Canada. The USA Women's National Team has not competed in the Canada Cup since 2003.
A total of 37 players have been selected to attend the Women's National Team Camp including the 22 member National Training Team selected back in September of 2006. The full list of available here
Coaches for the 2007 USA Softball Women's National team are Head Coach Mike Candrea (Casa Grande, Ariz.) from the University of Arizona, Assistant Coach Chuck D'Arcy (Sacramento, Calif.), Assistant Coach Karen Johns (Charlottesville, Va.) from the University of Virginia and Assistant Coach John Rittman, (Stanford, CA) from Stanford University.
Other coaches who will be attending the Women's National Team Selection Camp are Carol Hutchins (University of Michigan), Mike Larabee (Wright State), Mark Lumley (Baylor University), Scott Whitlock (Kennesaw State University) and Teresa Wilson (Texas Tech University).
