Women of Troy Star In WNBA Action

May 22, 2007

As the WNBA season gets underway, there will be several opportunities for USC fans to track their former Trojan favorites in the pro ranks. The USC women's basketball program now has had 11 players and one coach join the WNBA, seven of whom were selected in the draft. Two athletes were chosen as members of the 1997 Inaugural Elite Selection - Cynthia Cooper and Lisa Leslie. This year, USC is represented by five players and one head coach in the WNBA. Karleen (Shields) Thompson recently took over as the head coach of the Houston Comets, where she is at the helm of a program starring fellow former Trojan Tina Thompson - one of the five Women of Troy playing at the top level of women's basketball in the U.S.

The most recent addition to the pro ranks is 2007 graduate Shay Murphy, who is entering her rookie season with the Minnesota Lynx. Murphy was the 15th pick in the draft this season, becoming the seventh Trojan to be selected in the draft and the 11th to play in the WNBA. Fellow 2007 senior Chloe Kerr was chosen as a free agent by the Phoenix Mercury but was waived on May 10. Murphy, meanwhile, secured her spot on the Lynx roster and opened her pro career by grabbing six rebounds for the Lynx in a preseason win over the Sparks. The Sparks are without their three-time WNBA MVP, Trojan all-star Lisa Leslie, who is out this season to have her first child. Rounding out the Women of Troy competing in the WNBA this season are 2004 USC grad Ebony Hoffman, who stars on the Indiana Fever, and the Sacramento Monarchs' Adrain Williams.
