Lindsey Nelson Advances In NCAA Singles Action
May 23, 2007
ATHENS, GA. - USC junior Lindsey Nelson took her first step in her push to make a repeat appearance in the NCAA Singles final, winning her NCAA Singles Round of 64 match 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 on Wednesday at Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. Fellow Trojan Sarah Fansler was upended in her first NCAA match on Wednesday. Fourth-seeded Nelson faces Miami's Audrey Banada in the Round of 32 on Thursday.
Nelson opened up her 2007 NCAA Singles run with a three-setter against Anastasia Zhukova of Chattanooga. After pinning up a solid 6-2 win in the first, Nelson was broken in the second set and slipped to a 3-6 loss in the second to set up the final stretch. In the third, Nelson quickly dashed any hopes Khukova may have been building up of a comeback, streaking to a smooth 5-0 lead in the final set on the way to a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 win that pushes the USC junior into the Round of 32. There, #5 Nelson will face Miami's #48 Audrey Banada, who pulled out a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over USC's Amanda Fink at the No. 3 singles spot during the Trojans' NCAA Round of 16 matchup in the NCAA Team Championships last week.
In Fansler's Round of 64 match, the freshman was edged in a tiebreaker in the first set and got down 2-5 in the second before climbing back with a break and a hold to trail 4-5. Taylor was able to hold on in her next service game, however, ending Fansler's first NCAA Singles run with a 7-6 (5), 6-4 decision. Fansler finishes out 2007 with a 32-11 overall singles record, holding the most wins on the team and ranked #11 in the latest ITA rankings (as of April 30).
