USC Men Fall In NCAA Singles Round of 64

May 23, 2007

ATHENS, GA. - The odds were stacked against the three USC men's tennis players heading into the 2007 NCAA Singles Championships, as seniors Jamil Al-Agba, Dejan Cvetkovic and junior Kaes Van't Hof all drew tough first-round matches. Each Trojan faced a higher ranked opponent, and all three were unable to pull off upsets in the first round of the NCAA Singles competition, held Wednesday at Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.

Al-Agba was the first Trojan to get started on the NCAA Men's Singles competition, coming up against #30 Ivan Puchkarov of Oklahoma State. Puchkarov took the early upper hand, and went on to top #36 Al-Agba 6-3, 6-4 in the Round of 64 to close out the Trojan senior's NCAA run and put his senior singles record at 20-11 on the year. It was the second appearance for Al-Agba in the NCAA Singles Championships. He reached the Round of 32 as a sophomore.

While Al-Agba was battling Puchkarov, Van't Hof opened up his debut on the NCAA Singles scene by facing seventh-seeded Stephen Bass of Notre Dame. Bass went up 6-2 in the first set for an early advantage. On serve in the second set, #63-ranked Van't Hof was barely broken to get Bass up 4-3. The Fighting Irish player came through in the end, posting a 6-2, 6-4 win over Van't Hof, who finishes his junior singles season with 30-8 overall mark.

Cvetkovic was the last Trojan to hit the courts on the day, squaring off against fourth-seeded Kevin Anderson of Illinois for his opening NCAA Round of 64 match. Cvetkovic fell behind to trail 6-4 after the first set. Anderson took control after that, pinning up a 6-4, 6-2 win over Cvetkovic to end the #52-ranked Trojan senior's season with an 18-15 overall singles record.
