Sarah Fansler Named ITA National Rookie of the Year

May 24, 2007

After taking the Pac-10 and the West Region by storm in her freshman season at USC, Sarah Fansler's success has been recognized on the national stage as well. Finishing the year with a 32-11 overall singles mark, Fansler has been named the 2007 ITA National Rookie of the Year. Fansler's award makes her the second straight USC freshman to earn the national rookie honor. Sophomore Amanda Fink also was named the ITA National Rookie of the Year in 2006.

For Fansler, the laundry list of accolades are but an afterthought for the focused freshman, but her successes are still worthy of recognition. On the way to her glowing 32-11 overall singles mark, Fansler opened her freshman campaign with an early 11-match win streak that included claiming the ITA West Regional Singles Championship. She and teammate Dianne Matias also worked their way to the final of the ITA West Regional Doubles competition, falling to fellow Women of Troy Anca Anastasiu/Julie Smekodub in the title match. Fansler went on to play primarily at the No. 2 singles slot for USC dual matches, generating a 16-5 dual match singles record. In doubles, she posted a 20-13 overall mark with four different partners, though she and Matias played the majority of their dual matches together.

Ranked No. 11 entering the 2007 NCAA Championships, Fansler closed down the regular season as the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and the ITA West Region Rookie of the Year before earning her national honors. She was selected as a 9-16 seed in the NCAA Singles competition where she fell in the first round to close out her freshman campaign with a 32-11 singles mark, holding her with the most wins among her USC teammates.
