Stanford Women's Eights Moves On To NCAA Semifinals

May 25, 2007

Oak Ridge, Tenn. - The Stanford women's rowing varsity eight boat has moved on to Saturday's semifinals at the NCAA Rowing Championships with its performance on the first day of action Friday. Stanford's boat won the repechage in a time 6:35.98 of after taking fourth in the second of three earlier heats in 6:36.12 during the event being held at Melton Lake.

Stanford passed a pair of boats during the repechage to claim its victory, moving into second place in the third 500 and passing Princeton in the sprint.

The Cardinal missed second-place by just .45 in its heat with a photo finish between the second, third and fourth-place squads that took race officials over an hour to announce.

'We knew the racing would be tight, and it's certainly proving to be an excellent field,' said Stanford head coach Yasmin Farooq. 'We learned a lot in both the heat and the rep, and we're glad to be in the semifinal. Probably the hardest and strangest thing all day was waiting for the results from the heat. But the team took it in stride, and when they found out they were going to the repechage they capitalized on the opportunity.'

Stanford's boat at the NCAA Championships includes Carly York, Eva Sheridan, Stephanie Morrison, Bea Gordon, Lauren Hofmayer, Jessi Reel, Kerry Birk, Elle Logan and coxswain Jenifer Brown.

Stanford will be in lane one of six in the second of two heats in Saturday's semifinals. The other five teams in Stanford's semifinal heat include Virginia, USC, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Tennessee. The first heat will feature Harvard, Minnesota, Brown, Yale, Dartmouth and Princeton.

Saturday's first heat will begin at 8:00 am, ET, with the second heat to follow at 8:15 am, ET. Six of the 12 teams in Saturday's heats will advance to Sunday's Grand Final (12:00 pm, ET) with the other six competing in the Petite Final (11:45 am, ET). California, Central Florida, UCLA and Washington are already in Sunday's Third Final after not qualifying for Saturday's semifinals.
